These two massive 21-meter (69 ft) quartzite statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III have stood watch over the Nile's west bank near Luxor since 1350 BCE, making them among Egypt's oldest and most iconic monuments. Originally flanking the entrance to Amenhotep's mortuary temple (now destroyed), the Colossi of Memnon face eastward toward the rising sun god Ra, their weathered features still radiating royal authority after nearly 3,400 years of Nile floods, earthquakes, and history.
