Naguib Mahfouz Museum in Cairo Guide and Literary History

Naguib Mahfouz Museum in Cairo Guide and Literary History

9 min read | Published: Oct 28, 2026 | Updated: Oct 29, 2026 | TRIPS IN EGYPT

Few writers are as tied to one city as Naguib Mahfouz is to Cairo. Born in the old quarter of Gamaliya in 1911, he spent seventy years turning its alleys, cafés and crowded homes into novels, and in 1988 he became the first Arab writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Naguib Mahfouz Museum, opened in July 2019, brings his desk, books and medals back to the streets where it all began.

Walk out of the museum, and the scenes of his novels are still around you, smelling of coffee, incense and spices. This guide covers his life, the 18th-century building that houses the museum, what you will see in each hall, practical visitor information, a short literary walk and the books worth reading first. Here are all things you need to know about the Naguib Mahfouz Museum in Cairo:

Mahfouz was born on 11 December 1911, the youngest of seven children, in a house on Bayt al-Qadi Square in Gamaliya. His family moved to the newer district of Abbasiya when he was a boy, but the old quarter stayed in his imagination for the rest of his life. He studied philosophy at Cairo University and worked as a civil servant for decades, writing in the evenings.

His career moved through several stages, and the museum follows them closely:

Year Milestone
1939 Publishes his first novel, Khufu's Wisdom, set in the age of the pharaohs
1945 to 1947 Turns to modern Cairo with Khan al-Khalili and Midaq Alley
1956 to 1957 Publishes the Cairo Trilogy: Palace Walk, Palace of Desire and Sugar Street
1959 Children of the Alley appears in serial form in Al-Ahram and is banned as a book in Egypt
1988 Wins the Nobel Prize in Literature
1994 Survives a stabbing outside his home, which weakened his writing hand
2006 Dies in Cairo on 30 August, aged 94

In all, he wrote more than 30 novels and hundreds of short stories, and dozens of his books became films. His early historical novels drew on the same history you can see at the Great Pyramid of Giza, but it was the ordinary lives of Cairo's people that made him famous. Fans of those early books can see the real Khufu and his court in the Egyptian Museum.

The Building: The Takiyya of Muhammad Bey Abu al-Dahab

The museum sits inside the complex of Muhammad Bey Abu al-Dahab, an Ottoman-era ruler of Egypt whose nickname means "father of gold", from his habit of throwing gold coins to crowds. Built in 1774 opposite the main entrance of Al-Azhar Mosque, the complex includes a mosque, a school, a water trough for animals and a takiyya, a lodge that once housed Sufis, students and poor travelers.

Turning the takiyya into a museum was a long project. Work began in 2006, the year Mahfouz died, and the museum finally opened on 14 July 2019, under Egypt's Ministry of Culture and its Cultural Development Fund. Most of his personal belongings came from his daughter, Om Kalthoum, who gave them to the ministry.

The setting is part of the visit. Stone arches, wooden mashrabiya windows and a quiet courtyard frame the exhibits, and from the upper windows you can look across at the minarets of Al-Azhar. Our guide to Islamic sites in Egypt covers more buildings from the same era.

Inside the Naguib Mahfouz Museum: Hall by Hall

The museum covers about 1,600 square meters on two floors, with a large central hall on each level and smaller rooms on both sides. Text panels on the walls follow the stages of his career.

The ground floor and the libraries. Four libraries fill this level. The most personal is Mahfouz's own library of 1,091 books, many with his notes and dedications from other writers. A world literature library, an art library and a general reading library are open to researchers and students, and reading tables make the museum a working space as much as a gallery.

The halls upstairs. The upper floor holds the main exhibition:

  • The Alley Hall shows his novels set in old Cairo, with a short film of the streets of Gamaliya.
  • The Biography Hall displays family photographs, manuscripts and personal belongings.
  • The Nobel Hall holds the 1988 Nobel medal and certificate, and a nearby room shows the Nile Necklace, Egypt's highest state honor.
  • The Awards Hall shows dozens of other medals, ribbons and honorary degrees.
  • A room recreating his study holds his desk, chair and his famous thick-lensed glasses.
  • The Cinema Hall plays clips from the many films based on his novels.
  • The Dream of Departure Hall documents the 1994 attack on his life and his final years.

Two further halls host writing workshops, book signings and literary evenings, so it is worth checking the museum's events page before your visit. It is a small museum, but each room is personal in a way large collections rarely manage. Our overview of Egypt's museums lists other Cairo museums to add to your trip.

Visitor Guide: Location, Opening Hours and Tickets

Location: The museum stands in the Abu al-Dahab complex, facing Al-Azhar Mosque on Al-Azhar Street, a few minutes' walk from Khan El Khalili and the Al-Hussein Mosque.

Getting there: The nearest metro station is Bab El Shaaria on Line 3, about a 15-minute walk away. A taxi or Uber from Downtown takes about 15 to 20 minutes; ask for "Al-Azhar" and walk the last few meters.

Opening hours: Published hours vary between sources. The museum has listed daily hours of 9 am to 5 pm, while some recent guides show a split day from 9 am to 2 pm and 5 pm to 9 pm, with a weekly closing day. Check the official museum site or call ahead before you go.

Tickets: When the museum opened, foreign visitors paid EGP 20 and foreign students EGP 10, with lower prices for Egyptians. Prices may have risen since, but entry remains far cheaper than Cairo's major museums. Bring small cash in Egyptian pounds, since card payment is not always available here. The museum has also opened free of charge on special dates, such as the week of the anniversary of his death on 30 August.

Time needed: Plan on 60 to 90 minutes, more if you want to sit in the library.

Dress modestly, as you will likely continue into Al-Azhar or Al-Hussein afterward. Our Cairo travel tips explain what to wear and how to handle the crowds of the old city.

A Naguib Mahfouz Literary Walk Through Gamaliya

The best way to understand the museum is to step outside and see the places it describes. This walk takes about two hours at an easy pace:

  1. Al-Azhar Mosque. Start opposite the museum at the mosque founded in 970, where Mahfouz's characters pray, argue and study.
  2. Al-Hussein Square. Cross Al-Azhar Street to the square, the center of Ramadan nights in his stories.
  3. El Fishawy Café. In the lanes behind the square, this café has served tea and coffee since 1797, and Mahfouz was a regular for years.
  4. Khan El Khalili. The bazaar gave its name to his 1945 novel, set during the Second World War.
  5. Bayn al-Qasrayn. Walk north along Al-Muizz Street to the stretch "between the two palaces", the Arabic title of Palace Walk, lined with Mamluk mosques.
  6. Bayt al-Qadi Square. Turn east toward the small square where Mahfouz was born.
  7. Midaq Alley and Sugar Street. Head back south past Al-Azhar to the short alley off Al-Ghouriya that inspired Midaq Alley, and on toward al-Sukkariyya near Bab Zuweila, the setting of Sugar Street.

You can end with dinner at the Naguib Mahfouz Café in Khan El Khalili, named in his honor, or join the Tanoura dance show at Wekalet El Ghoury from USD 35 nearby. Our list of things to do in Cairo at night has more ideas, including an evening on our Cairo Opera House Tour from USD 40.

If you would rather walk with a guide, our Al Muizz and Khan El Khalili Day Tour and our Cairo day tour to El Muizz Street and Al Azhar Park both start from USD 45 and pass most of these stops. End the day watching the sunset over the old city from Al Azhar Park, or browse all our Cairo day tours. You can also continue south to the Sultan Hassan Mosque and the Salah El Din Citadel.

What to Read Before You Visit

What to Read Before You Visit - Trips in Egypt.webp

You do not need to have read Mahfouz to enjoy the museum, but one or two of his books will make every room and street come alive. All of these are available in English:

Book Why read it Where it is set
Midaq Alley Short and lively, the best place to start An alley off Al-Ghouriya
Palace Walk The first part of the Cairo Trilogy, following one family from 1917 Bayn al-Qasrayn
Khan al-Khalili A gentle story of two brothers during the Second World War Khan El Khalili
Children of the Alley His most controversial novel, an allegory of religious history An imagined Cairo alley
The Harafish A sweeping tale of one neighborhood over generations An old Cairo quarter

Reading them on the plane, then walking the same lanes the next day, is one of the most rewarding ways to experience Egypt's culture and traditions. For the rest of your trip, our Cairo travel guide and list of things to do in Cairo cover the city's other highlights.
