Siwa Oasis is a hidden pocket dimension filled with the most heavenly collection of plant life that comes in every form and color. It is one the most remote of Egypt's inhabited oases, a green island of palm groves and salt lakes in the Western Desert, about 50 km from the Libyan border. Getting there from Cairo means a long road journey of at least eight hours, because there are no scheduled flights and no railway to the oasis.
Pilgrims once crossed this same desert to hear the Oracle of Amun, and Alexander the Great made the journey in 331 BC to be told he was the son of a god. This guide explains how far Siwa is, how to travel there by direct bus, in two stages via Marsa Matrouh or by private car, and what to know before you set off. Here are all things you need to know about how to get from Cairo to Siwa Oasis:

How Far Is Siwa Oasis From Cairo?
Siwa is about 750 to 800 km from central Cairo by road. Every practical route runs northwest to the Mediterranean coast, west along the coast to Marsa Matrouh, then about 300 km south across the desert to the oasis. The oasis itself lies about 18 m below sea level, in a long depression between the limestone ridges and the dunes of the Great Sand Sea.
| Option | Travel time | Typical cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct overnight bus | 10 to 12 hours | Usually under $20 | Budget travelers |
| Two stages via Marsa Matrouh | 12 to 14 hours, or two days | a little more than the direct bus | Flexible travelers |
| Private car with driver | 8 to 10 hours | From about EGP 4,000 to 6,000 per car | Families and small groups |
| Self-drive | 8 to 10 hours | Rental plus fuel and tolls | Experienced drivers only |
The oasis is one of several in Egypt's Western Desert. Our guide to the Egyptian oases explains how Siwa differs from the others.

The Direct Bus From Cairo to Siwa
The cheapest way to get from Cairo to Siwa is the direct overnight coach run by the state-owned West and Mid Delta Bus Company. It usually leaves Turgoman bus station in Downtown Cairo in the evening, between about 9:30 and 10 pm, and reaches the bus station in Siwa town the next morning.
The trip takes 10 to 12 hours, with a rest stop on the coast and short halts at police checkpoints. Fares have varied widely in recent years, but a seat usually costs well under $20. Smaller operators also run 14-seat minibuses from the Abdel Moneim Riad area near Tahrir, which are a little faster and a little more expensive.
The direct bus is basic but reliable. A few tips make the night easier:
- Buy your ticket a day or two ahead. There are only one or two direct departures a day, and they fill up on Egyptian holidays and from December to February.
- Bring a warm layer. Desert nights are cold in winter, and the air conditioning is cold all year.
- Keep your passport on you. Police board the bus at checkpoints and check every foreign traveler's documents.
- Carry food and water. The rest stop is short, and there is little on sale after midnight.
The return bus usually leaves Siwa in the late afternoon or evening and arrives in Cairo early the next morning.

Going in Two Stages via Marsa Matrouh
If you do not want to spend a whole night on a bus, split the trip at Marsa Matrouh, the main town on Egypt's northwestern coast. It is roughly 500 km from Cairo, and the final 300 km to Siwa take about four hours.
Cairo to Marsa Matrouh. Go Bus and other coach companies run several daily services from Cairo, taking about 6 to 7 hours. In summer, Egyptian National Railways adds trains to Marsa Matrouh for Egyptians heading to the beach, and some airlines run seasonal flights to Marsa Matrouh's small airport, one of the regional airports in Egypt. Our guide to trains in Egypt explains how to buy tickets.
Marsa Matrouh to Siwa. Local West Delta buses and shared microbuses leave Marsa Matrouh several times a day for Siwa. Microbuses leave when they are full and cost very little, but they are cramped and run on no fixed timetable.
This route takes longer overall, but it lets you swim at Matrouh's white-sand beaches, such as Cleopatra's Bath and Agiba, and break the journey with a night by the sea. You can also start from Alexandria, which is about 290 km from Matrouh along the coast, and add a day tour to Alexandria from Cairo to your plans.

Driving or a Private Car: The Coastal Road Stage by Stage
A private car with a driver is the most comfortable way to get from Cairo to Siwa. The drive takes 8 to 10 hours with stops, and quotes start at around EGP 4,000 to 6,000 per car one way, more for a larger vehicle or if the driver stays in Siwa for your return.
These distances are approximate:
| Stage | Road | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cairo to the coast near Alexandria | Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road | about 200 km | 2.5 hours |
| Alexandria area to El Alamein | International Coastal Road | about 110 km | 1.5 hours |
| El Alamein to Marsa Matrouh | International Coastal Road | about 180 km | 2 hours |
| Marsa Matrouh to Siwa | Matrouh-Siwa Road | about 300 km | 3.5 to 4 hours |
The coastal stretch is a fast, divided highway lined with holiday villages. The road south from Matrouh to Siwa is paved and in good condition, but it is a two-lane road through empty desert with very few services.
The car's real advantage is the stops. At El Alamein, the War Cemetery and the Military Museum mark the battles of 1942 that turned the war in North Africa. Marsa Matrouh is the natural place for lunch and fuel, and some drivers stop at the clear-water bays just west of the town.
If you plan to drive yourself, keep these points in mind:
- Fill up in Marsa Matrouh. There is almost nothing between Matrouh and Siwa.
- Drive the desert stage in daylight. The Matrouh-Siwa road is unlit, and sand can drift across it after strong winds.
- Carry your passport and car papers. There are several military and police checkpoints, especially on the last stage.
- Bring water and a spare tire. Mobile coverage is patchy on the desert road.
A second road links Siwa with Bahariya Oasis across about 400 km of open desert. It requires special permits and is usually travelled only on organized 4x4 safaris, not by independent travelers.

Before You Go: Season, Money and Permits
Siwa is a desert oasis, and a few practical details matter more here than anywhere else in Egypt.
When to go. October to April is the best time to travel, with warm days of 20 to 28°C and cool nights. From June to August, daytime temperatures in Siwa often pass 40°C. The date harvest in autumn and the Siyaha festival, held at full moon in October, are special times to visit.
Money. Siwa has only a few ATMs, and they sometimes run out of cash. Bring enough Egyptian pounds from Cairo or Marsa Matrouh for your stay.
Permits and guides. Visitors do not need a permit to travel to Siwa town itself. Trips into the Great Sand Sea, to the hot springs of Bir Wahed or beyond the oasis require a licensed local guide and a 4x4, and the operator arranges the permits.
Respect local customs. Siwans are Amazigh people with their own language, Siwi, and a conservative way of life. Dress modestly, cover your shoulders and knees, and ask before photographing anyone, especially women.

What to See in Siwa, and Tours From Cairo
The long journey rewards you with some of the most atmospheric sights in Egypt. The ruined mud-brick fortress of Shali, built in the 13th century from kershef, a mix of salt and clay, overlooks the town. The Temple of the Oracle of Amun at Aghurmi is where Alexander received his prophecy. You can also visit Gebel al-Mawta, the Mountain of the Dead, with its painted tombs, swim in Cleopatra's Spring, named after Queen Cleopatra, and float in the salt lakes, which are as buoyant as the Dead Sea. At sunset, Fatnas Island looks out over the lake toward the desert.
Two nights are the minimum to make the trip worthwhile, and three or four let you add a 4x4 safari into the dunes.
If you would rather not organize the transport yourself, our 8 Days Cairo, Alexandria and Siwa Tour starts at $820 per person. It starts with the Giza Pyramids, then drives from Alexandria to Siwa via the El Alamein Museum and Marsa Matrouh, with three nights in the oasis, a safari to the Great Sand Sea and a private car back to Cairo. It is part of our Egypt solo tours, and we can arrange the same route for couples, families and groups.
If Siwa is too far for your schedule, the Egyptian deserts closer to Cairo offer a similar adventure. Our overnight safari to Bahariya and the White Desert starts at $195 and passes the Black Desert, the 6 Days of Egyptian Wonders and Bahariya Trip starts at $500, and the Faiyum Oasis, with the whale fossils of Wadi El Hitan, is only two hours from Cairo. All our Egypt desert trips are listed in one place.
