For 4,500 years, the pyramids have waited at the desert's edge, and they will wait a few more hours while you clear passport control. The Giza Pyramids, the most famous of all the Egyptian pyramids, are one of the few wonders on earth that you can reach between two flights. Cairo International Airport sits on the northeastern edge of Cairo, and the pyramids rise on the opposite side of the city, at the edge of the Western Desert. Between them lie about 45 km of highway and one of the busiest traffic systems in Africa.
This guide explains how far it is, how long the drive takes at different times of day, every way to make the trip, and how to plan a Cairo layover that gets you to the Sphinx and back in time for your next flight. Here are all things you need to know about traveling from Cairo Airport to the Giza Pyramids:

How Far Is Cairo Airport From the Giza Pyramids?
The drive from Cairo Airport to the Giza Pyramids Complex is about 40 to 50 km, depending on the route. Most drivers take the Ring Road, which loops around the east and south of the city and crosses the Nile south of the center. Others cut through the middle on the Salah Salem road and the 26th of July Corridor. Both end in Giza, a few minutes from the plateau.
Traffic, not distance, decides your travel time. These are realistic drive times from the terminal to the pyramid gates:
| When you leave | Typical drive |
|---|---|
| Before 7 am, or Friday morning | 45 to 50 minutes |
| Midday on a weekday | 60 to 75 minutes |
| 8 to 10 am, or 3 to 8 pm on weekdays | 90 minutes to 2 hours |
| Late evening | about 1 hour |
Friday is the Egyptian weekend, so Friday mornings are the quietest time of the week on Cairo's roads. Thursday evenings and weekday afternoons are the worst.
Cairo Airport has three passenger terminals. Terminal 3 is the newest and handles EgyptAir and most of its Star Alliance partners, while Terminals 1 and 2 serve most other airlines. A free shuttle bus links them. You can read more about the country's other gateways in our guide to airports in Egypt.

Every Way to Get From Cairo Airport to the Pyramids
There are four realistic ways to make the trip. The right one depends on whether you are heading to a hotel or coming back for a flight.
| Option | Time | Typical cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber or Careem | 45 min to 2 h | shown in the app, usually well under $20 | One-way trips to a Giza hotel |
| Official white taxi | 45 min to 2 h | metered, plus any tolls | Travelers without data |
| Pre-booked private car | 45 min to 2 h | about EGP 1,200 one way, more with waiting time | Layovers, families, luggage |
| Bus 111 and metro | 1.5 to 2.5 h | under $3 | Patient travelers with light bags |
Uber and Careem
Both apps work at Cairo Airport, and each terminal has a signposted pickup area outside arrivals. Open the app after you collect your bags, follow its directions to the pickup point and check the car's plate before you get in. The fare is fixed before you confirm. A local SIM or airport Wi-Fi is enough to book, and the telecom counters in arrivals sell SIM cards with data.
Official Taxis
White metered taxis wait at the official ranks outside every terminal. Ask the driver to run the meter, and agree in advance on any toll or airport fee. Ignore the men who approach you inside the arrivals hall offering a car. Their prices are often double the fair rate.
Private Transfers
A pre-booked driver meets you in arrivals with your name on a sign, carries your bags to an air-conditioned car and takes you straight to the plateau or your hotel. Prices are fixed and usually include tolls and airport parking. For a layover, this is the only option that guarantees a car will be waiting to take you back.
Bus and Metro
The budget route starts with Bus 111 from the airport bridge, which runs about hourly to Ramses Station or to the Cairo International Fair, where you can join the metro toward Cairo University and take a taxi for the last stretch. The metro does not yet reach the airport. This route is fine with a backpack and a free day, but never for a layover.

Can You Visit the Pyramids on a Cairo Layover?
Yes, if your layover is long enough and your passport lets you enter Egypt. Before you plan the sightseeing, check three things.
A visa. To leave the airport, you must enter Egypt. Many nationalities, including citizens of the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and the EU, can get a visa on arrival for $30 in cash at the bank counters before passport control, or apply online in advance for the $30 single-entry e-Visa. At Cairo Airport you can also pay a $36 digital visa on arrival by card. Our guide to the Egypt entry visa explains the options.
Your bags. If both flights are on the same ticket, your checked bags should go straight through to your final destination. On separate tickets, you must collect them and check them in again, which adds about 30 minutes.
The time math. Count backward from your next flight. You need about 30 to 60 minutes to leave the airport after landing, up to two hours each way in traffic, and three hours at the airport before an international departure. On a 10-hour layover, that leaves roughly three to four hours at the sites.

Cairo Layover Plans by Hours
Every Cairo layover is different, but the hours you have decide what is realistic.
Under 6 hours. Stay at the airport. The drive, the immigration queue and the check-in buffer leave almost no time at the pyramids, and the risk of missing your flight is real.
6 to 8 hours. Pyramids and Sphinx only. Go straight to the plateau, spend 90 minutes seeing the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Panorama viewpoint and the Great Sphinx, and head back. This works best with an early-morning arrival and a private driver.
8 to 10 hours. Add the Grand Egyptian Museum, about 2 km from the pyramids, or a long lunch with a view of the plateau. Our Cairo Layover Tour is built for this window, with airport pickup, an Egyptologist, the pyramids, the museum and lunch.
10 to 14 hours. Pyramids in the morning, the GEM and lunch, then the old city: the Khan el-Khalili bazaar and Al-Muizz Street, which sit on the way back to the airport. Our Day Trip to Pyramids from Cairo Airport adds the Step Pyramid of Saqqara instead, with lunch included.
Overnight. Sleep in Giza, where some hotel rooms look straight at the pyramids, and be at the gate when it opens at 7 am. With a full day you can join the Pyramids, Saqqara and Dahshur day tour or the Pyramids, Museum and Khan el-Khalili trip before your evening flight.
If you are already staying in the city, a half-day pyramids tour from Cairo or a half-day tour to the Grand Egyptian Museum fits around a late flight, and the Pyramids Photo Session tour pairs a professional photographer with the classic viewpoints.

At the Pyramids: Gates, Tickets and a Short-Visit Route
Most visitors now enter through the main gate on the western side of the plateau, near the Grand Egyptian Museum, where electric buses run between the main viewpoints. The older gate by the Sphinx, in the village of Nazlet el-Samman, is handy if you want to start with the Sphinx and the Valley Temple. The plateau opens at 7 am, with last entry around 4 pm.
| Ticket | Foreign adult |
|---|---|
| Giza Plateau | EGP 700 |
| Inside the Great Pyramid | EGP 1,500 |
| Grand Egyptian Museum | EGP 1,570, rising to EGP 1,830 on 1 November |
Ticket offices take cards only, and the GEM sells timed entry slots online, so book yours before you land.
In 90 minutes, the best route is the Great Pyramid, a short ride to the Panorama point for the view of all nine pyramids, then down past the Pyramid of Khafre and the smaller Pyramid of Menkaure to the Sphinx and the granite Valley Temple. Skip going inside the Great Pyramid on a short layover: the queue and the narrow climb to the King's Chamber can take an hour. Our guide on how to enjoy the Giza Pyramids Complex has more detail for a longer visit, and our article on how the pyramids were built is good reading for the drive.

Layover Tips for Cairo Airport
A few small preparations keep a tight schedule from slipping.
Carry cash. Bring crisp US dollar bills for the visa on arrival and withdraw Egyptian pounds from a bank ATM after passport control. Keep small notes for tips, the bathroom attendants and water. Our guide to tipping in Egypt explains the usual amounts.
Save your address in Arabic. A screenshot of your hotel name and address in Arabic helps any taxi driver.
Say no politely. Camel and horse touts at the plateau can be persistent. Agree on a price and a duration before you get on any animal, or simply say "la, shukran" (no, thank you) and keep walking.
Dress for the sun. There is little shade on the plateau. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water, even in winter.
Check where you land. Some low-cost flights from Europe and the Gulf, including easyJet, Wizz Air, Air Arabia and flydubai, use Sphinx International Airport on the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, west of Giza. It is much closer to the pyramids and the GEM than Cairo International, so the same layover gives you more time at the sites.
