Cairo keeps the memory of five thousand years under one sky, and much of it sits behind glass in the city's museums. Tutankhamun's gold, the mummies of Egypt's greatest kings, Coptic icons, Mamluk lamps and the halls of the last royal family are all within a short drive of each other. The challenge is not finding a museum worth visiting but choosing between them.
This Cairo museums guide covers the three essential museums, the smaller collections worth a detour, ticket prices and opening hours, and simple day plans grouped by area so you do not lose half your day in traffic. Here are all things you need to know about the best museums in Cairo:

The Big Three: GEM, the Egyptian Museum and NMEC
The Grand Egyptian Museum stands about 2 km from the pyramids and is now the main home of ancient Egyptian art. It displays the complete Tutankhamun collection, more than 5,000 objects shown together for the first time, from the golden mask to his chariots and shrines. The Grand Staircase, lined with royal statues, leads up to a window framing the pyramids. It opens daily from 9 am to 6 pm, with late hours until 9 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and the last entry is one hour before closing. Our Grand Egyptian Museum guide has a full floor plan, and our story of the boy king Tutankhamun explains why his tomb still fascinates the world.
The Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square opened in 1902 in a pink neoclassical building by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon. It still holds well over 100,000 objects, even after many pieces moved to Giza. Highlights include the Narmer Palette, the statue of Khafre, the Amarna galleries of Akhenaten and the treasures of Tanis. The rooms feel old-fashioned, with wooden cases and handwritten labels, and many visitors love it for exactly that reason. Read our Egyptian Museum guide before you go.
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat received 22 royal mummies, 18 kings and 4 queens, in the Pharaohs' Golden Parade of April 2021. They now rest in a dark underground hall, among them Ramesses II, Seqenenre Tao and Hatshepsut. Upstairs, the main gallery traces Egypt from prehistory to the modern age. NMEC opens daily from 9 am to 5 pm and runs an evening session from 6 pm to 9 pm, which makes it a good choice after a busy day. See our NMEC guide and our piece on ancient Egyptian mummification for background.
If you only have time for one, choose the GEM for ancient Egypt and NMEC for the mummies. The Egyptian Museum rewards anyone who has already seen the GEM and wants the older collection.

Smaller Museums Worth the Detour
The big three cover the pharaohs, but Cairo's later centuries live in smaller museums that are quieter, cheaper and often more personal.
The Museum of Islamic Art in Bab al-Khalq holds about 100,000 objects from the 7th to the 19th centuries, with roughly 4,500 on display. Look for Mamluk mosque lamps, carved wooden doors, Iznik tiles and early Qurans. It reopened in 2017 after a car bomb damaged the building in 2014.
The Coptic Museum sits inside the walls of the Roman fortress of Babylon in Old Cairo. Marcus Simaika founded it in 1910, and its galleries show icons, textiles, carved wood and some of the oldest Christian manuscripts in the world. It lies a few steps from the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra Synagogue, so you can see three faiths in one morning. Our page on Coptic sites in Egypt lists more.
The Gayer-Anderson Museum joins two Ottoman houses, from 1540 and 1632, beside the Mosque of Ibn Tulun. Major Robert Gayer-Anderson filled them with carpets, furniture and antiques, and a scene from the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me was shot here.
Abdeen Palace was the seat of Egypt's khedives and kings from 1874 to 1952, and its ground floor now holds museums of arms, silver, royal documents and presidential gifts. Manial Palace on Roda Island, built for Prince Muhammad Ali Tewfik, mixes Ottoman, Persian and Moorish styles, and our Manial Palace and Cairo Tower day tour from USD 50 includes it.
Finally, the Salah El Din Citadel holds the National Military Museum and the Police Museum inside its walls, beside the Muhammad Ali Mosque. One ticket covers the Citadel and its museums, and our article on why the Cairo Citadel is worth the trip explains what else is up there.

How to Plan Your Museum Day in Cairo
Cairo traffic can turn a 20 km drive into a 90-minute crawl, so the smartest way to plan is by area. Pick one cluster per day, start at opening time and keep to two museums at most.
Day plan 1: Giza. Arrive at the GEM at 9 am and spend the morning on the Tutankhamun galleries. After lunch, drive five minutes to the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx for the afternoon. Our half-day tour to the Grand Egyptian Museum from USD 75 handles the tickets and transfers for you.
Day plan 2: Old Cairo and Fustat. Start at the Coptic Museum at 9 am, walk through the churches of Old Cairo, then take a short taxi ride to NMEC for the mummies. Mar Girgis metro station on Line 1 stands right outside the Coptic Museum. Our Cairo Wonders trip to NMEC from USD 100 covers this side of the city.
Day plan 3: Downtown and Islamic Cairo. Spend the morning at the Egyptian Museum, eat lunch downtown, then head east to the Museum of Islamic Art. End the day in the lanes of Khan El Khalili as the lamps come on. Our day tour to the Egyptian Museum, Citadel and Old Cairo from USD 50 mixes this plan with the Citadel.
Short on time? Our day tour to the pyramids, Egyptian Museum and Khan El Khalili from USD 95 fits the highlights into one day. With three or four days, our 4 Days in Cairo tour covers every museum cluster without rushing.

Tickets, Payment, Photos and Other Practical Tips
Cairo museums follow similar rules, but a few details can save you a wasted trip.
Payment. Most state museums, including the GEM, the Egyptian Museum, NMEC, the Coptic Museum and the Museum of Islamic Art, now prefer Visa or Mastercard. Carry some Egyptian pounds as well, because smaller museums such as Gayer-Anderson and Abdeen may still take cash only. GEM tickets can also be booked online in advance, which is wise on weekends.
Students and children. Foreign students with a valid international student card pay about half price at most museums. Young children usually enter free, but the age limit differs from one museum to another.
Opening hours. Most museums open around 9 am and close around 5 pm, with the last ticket an hour earlier. Hours shorten during Ramadan, often to 9 am to 3 pm, and some smaller museums close on Fridays or keep a midday break for prayers.
Photography. Phone photos without flash are allowed in most galleries. Tripods, drones and professional cameras need permits, and photos are banned in the NMEC Royal Mummies Hall and around some star objects.
Comfort. Arrive at opening time, when galleries are cooler and quieter, and take breaks every hour. Carry water, wear comfortable shoes and keep shoulders and knees covered if you plan to visit mosques or churches on the same day. The best season for a museum-heavy trip runs from October to April, as our guide to the best time to visit Cairo explains.
Getting around. Uber and Careem are cheap and easy between museums, while the metro suits Old Cairo and Downtown. Our Cairo travel tips cover transport, tipping and safety in more detail, and our list of things to do in Cairo has ideas for the evenings.
