Sooner or later, every trip to Egypt reaches the same question: how do you get from Cairo to Luxor? The two cities sit about 650 km apart along the Nile, the same river the pharaohs sailed to move between their northern capital and the great temples of Thebes. Today you can cover that distance in an hour by plane or overnight in a sleeper cabin, and both have their charms.
In this guide, we compare every way to travel from Cairo to Luxor, the flight, the sleeper train, the day train, the bus and the private car, with real journey times, fares, stations and booking tips, so you can choose the one that suits your time, budget and travel style. Here are all things you need to know about traveling from Cairo to Luxor:

Cairo to Luxor at a Glance: Which Option Is Best?
| Option | Journey time | Typical one-way price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flight | About 1 hour in the air, 4 to 5 hours door to door | USD 50 to 120 | Short trips, families, anyone in a hurry |
| Abela sleeper train | 9 to 10 hours overnight | From about USD 110 per person in a shared cabin | Saving a hotel night, a classic experience |
| Day train (first class) | 9 to 11 hours | About USD 30 to 60 | Budget travelers who want to see the countryside |
| Go Bus coach | 9 to 10 hours, mostly overnight | About EGP 480 to 950 | The tightest budgets |
| Private car | 8 to 10 hours | Priced per car, not per person | Groups, families and stops on the way |
Fares change often and foreigners pay set tourist prices on the trains, so treat these as a guide and check before you book.
In short: fly if your time is limited, take the sleeper if you want an adventure and a free night's accommodation, and choose the bus or day train only if budget matters more than comfort. Many of our guests do both, flying down to Luxor and taking the sleeper back to Cairo at the end of the trip.

Flying From Cairo to Luxor
Flying is the quickest and simplest way to travel from Cairo to Luxor. EgyptAir runs several flights a day, and Air Cairo and Nile Air add more, all from Cairo International Airport (CAI) to Luxor International Airport (LXR). The flight takes about an hour, and early morning departures put you in Luxor in time for a full day of sightseeing, such as our Luxor West Bank day tour.
One-way fares usually range from about USD 50 to 120, depending on the season and how early you book. In the busy months from October to April, book at least a few weeks ahead. Booking directly with the airline is often cheaper than through international sites, which can add fees on domestic routes.
Allow for the time on the ground. With an hour's drive to Cairo Airport, two hours before the flight and the journey into Luxor, the whole trip takes four to five hours door to door. Make sure you fly from Cairo International, not Sphinx Airport near Giza, which some search results also list. Luxor Airport is only about 6 km from the city, and most hotels are 15 to 20 minutes away. Our guide to the airports in Egypt explains each terminal.
If you are short on time, you can even see Luxor in a single day. Our Cairo to Luxor day trip by plane flies you down in the morning, visits the main East and West Bank sites with a guide and flies you back the same evening. For a slower pace, our 2-day Luxor tour from Cairo by plane adds a night in the city.

Cairo to Luxor by Train: Sleeper and Day Trains
The railway follows the Nile almost the whole way south, and for many travelers the train is part of the experience rather than just a way to get there.
The Abela Sleeper Train
The overnight sleeper is run by Abela Egypt, a private company, not the national railway. The important change in recent years is the station: sleepers no longer leave from Ramses Station. They now depart from the new Cairo Upper Egypt Station, known as Bashtil, in Imbaba, with a second boarding point at Giza Station.
Trains leave in the evening, usually between about 7 pm and 10 pm, and reach Luxor early the next morning, around 5:30 to 7 am. The scheduled journey is about 9 to 10 hours, but delays of an hour or two are not unusual.
Every ticket includes a private, lockable two-berth cabin with a sink and mirror, bedding, dinner and breakfast. Toilets are shared at the end of each carriage. The food is simple, so many travelers bring a few snacks. There are standard and newer Elite carriages, and fares for foreigners run from about USD 110 per person when two share a standard cabin to about USD 170 for an Elite cabin on your own. Prices are set in dollars, and you pay by card or in foreign currency.
Book on the official Abela website or at its offices in Cairo, Giza, Luxor and Aswan. Bookings open several months ahead, and cabins between October and April often sell out, so do not leave it to the last minute. Bring earplugs and a warm layer, because the air conditioning runs cold.
Day Trains
Several air-conditioned day trains, including the newer Talgo trains and the older VIP and Express services, run from Ramses Station to Luxor, calling at Upper Egypt Station and Giza on the way. The ride takes 9 to 11 hours and is a fascinating way to see village life along the Nile, with sugarcane fields, mud-brick houses and palm groves passing the window.
There is a catch for visitors. Foreigners cannot use the national railway's website or app, so tickets must be bought at the foreign reservations office upstairs at Ramses Station, through an authorized agent or on booking platforms such as 12Go, which add a fee. Foreigners pay a fixed fare in US dollars, usually around USD 30 to 60 in first class, and bookings open about two weeks before departure.

Cairo to Luxor by Bus, Private Car or Nile Cruise
By Bus
The bus is the cheapest way to travel from Cairo to Luxor. Go Bus runs modern overnight coaches from its Tahrir station, leaving around midnight and arriving at about 9 am, for about EGP 480 in standard class and EGP 950 in business class. Upper Egypt Bus Company also runs services from Turgoman Station, though its coaches are older.
The ride takes 9 to 10 hours, sometimes more, with a couple of rest stops at roadside cafés. Buses are good value and foreigners pay the same fare as Egyptians, but overnight seats are tiring, and you arrive with little sleep before a day of temples. Book online with Go Bus a few days ahead and confirm the departure point, as it can differ by service.
By Private Car
A private car with a driver takes about 8 to 10 hours on the desert highways, depending on traffic and stops. It costs more than other options for one or two people, but for a family or small group it can be competitive, and it gives you something no plane or train can: the chance to stop on the way.
The road passes some of Egypt's least visited sites. You can break the journey at Tell el-Amarna, the lost capital of Akhenaten, or visit the temples of Abydos and Dendera, which most visitors only see on a day tour from Luxor. Do not drive yourself; Egyptian roads, checkpoints and night driving are best left to local drivers.
Or Sail on to Aswan
Strictly speaking, the Nile cruise does not start in Cairo, but it often shapes how people plan this journey. Most travelers reach Luxor by plane or train and then sail south on one of our Luxor and Aswan Nile cruises to Aswan. If you have more time, a few ships also run the long Cairo to Aswan Nile cruise, which sails the whole way and stops at sites few other travelers see.

What to Do When You Arrive in Luxor
Luxor's train station is right in the city center, a short walk or taxi ride from Luxor Temple and most East Bank hotels. Sleeper trains arrive early, so ask your hotel about early check-in or leave your bags and head straight to Karnak Temple, which opens at 6 am, or cross the river to the Valley of the Kings.
Uber does not operate in Luxor, but inDrive does, and local taxis are cheap if you agree the price first. To plan your first days, see our guides to things to do in Luxor, Luxor in 48 hours and the best time to visit Luxor. Check the weather in Luxor before you pack, and if you can, save your second morning for a Luxor hot air balloon ride over the West Bank.
