Minya guards stories and epic art & poems, along with tombs painted four thousand years ago. Halfway between Cairo and Luxor, the Nile passes a stretch of cliffs and palm groves where a pharaoh once tried to change the faith of a nation. A city sacred to the god of wisdom and home to some of the oldest monasteries in Egypt. Few tourist regions offer so much history with so few visitors.
This guide covers the best tourist attractions in Minya, Egypt, from Beni Hassan and Tell el-Amarna to Hermopolis, Tuna el-Gebel and the Coptic and Islamic sites. It ends with ticket prices, opening hours, getting there, and tips for planning your visit. Here are all the things you need to know about Minya:

A Look at The Key Facts of The Bride of Upper Egypt, Minya
Minya is the capital of Minya Governorate, on the west bank of the Nile about 245 km south of Cairo. Egyptians call it the Bride of Upper Egypt, because it sits near the old border between Upper and Lower Egypt and because of its long Corniche along the river. Its name is often traced to the Coptic word Tmone, meaning a resting place or monastery.
The governorate has been inhabited since predynastic times and was the heart of the 16th nome, known as the Oryx nome, and the 15th, the Hare nome. That depth is why visitors find tombs from the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom and the New Kingdom, then Greco-Roman, Coptic and Islamic sites, often within a short drive of each other.

Beni Hassan and the Middle Kingdom Tombs
On the east bank, about 25 km south of Minya, a row of doorways cut into the limestone cliffs looks down on the Nile. These are the Tombs of Beni Hassan, the burial places of the governors who ruled the Oryx nome during the Middle Kingdom, around 2000 to 1800 BC.
The upper cemetery holds 39 rock-cut tombs, while about 800 smaller shaft tombs below belonged to lesser officials. Usually only a few tombs are open at a time, most often these:
- Tomb of Amenemhat (No. 2), a nomarch under Senusret I, with columned halls and scenes of farming, crafts and war.
- Tomb of Khnumhotep II (No. 3), famous for a painted caravan of Asiatic traders arriving in Egypt, among the best-known images of foreigners in Egyptian art.
- Tomb of Baqet III (No. 15), with hundreds of pairs of wrestlers shown move by move along the walls.
- Tomb of Khety (No. 17), with more wrestlers and scenes that some scholars read as ball games.
About 2 km south lies the Speos Artemidos, a rock-cut temple begun by Queen Hatshepsut for the lioness goddess Pakhet, whom the Greeks matched with Artemis. Expect a steep path and stairway up the cliff to the tombs, so bring water and comfortable shoes. Our page on ancient Egyptian tombs explains how tomb design changed over the centuries.

Tell el-Amarna: Akhenaten's Lost Capital
For a few years in the 14th century BC, this quiet desert bay on the east bank was the capital of Egypt. Akhenaten, born Amenhotep IV, founded Akhetaten, "the Horizon of the Aten," around 1346 BC, after turning away from the old gods to worship the sun disc alone. After his death, the city was abandoned within a few years, and later pharaohs broke up its temples for building stone.
That short life makes Amarna one of the best-preserved ancient cities in Egypt, even if little stands above knee height. The main sites are spread over about 10 km, so you need a vehicle to move between them:
- The Northern Tombs, cut for officials such as Huya and Meryre, show the royal family worshipping the Aten under its long, hand-tipped rays.
- The Southern Tombs, including the tomb of Ay, which carries the longest surviving copy of the Hymn to the Aten.
- The Royal Tomb, about 6 km up a desert valley, where Akhenaten was first buried and where scenes show the family mourning a daughter.
- The Boundary Stelae, carved into the cliffs to mark the city's limits, one of which stands near Tuna el-Gebel on the west bank.
In 1912, German archaeologists found the famous painted bust of Queen Nefertiti in the workshop of the sculptor Thutmose here, and it now sits in Berlin. Many Amarna treasures remain in Cairo, and our Cairo travel guide helps you plan time there, while the Egyptian Museum is a good place to see the art before or after your visit.

Hermopolis and Tuna el-Gebel: The City of Thoth
Across the river and a little north lies the land of Thoth, the ibis-headed god of writing and wisdom. Our guide to the ancient Egyptian gods explains his place among the other deities.
Hermopolis, today the village of El Ashmunein, was ancient Khemenu, the "City of the Eight," named after the eight primeval gods believed to have created the world here. The Greeks matched Thoth with Hermes, which gave the city its Greek name. Little survives above ground, but two colossal quartzite baboons of Amenhotep III, each about 4.5 m tall, still stand among the ruins, beside the columns of a 5th-century Christian basilica and a small open-air museum.
About 10 km to the west, Tuna el-Gebel was the city's cemetery from the New Kingdom to the Roman period. Its highlights are:
- The Tomb of Petosiris, a high priest of Thoth around 300 BC, built like a small temple, with scenes that mix Egyptian and Greek styles.
- The Tomb of Isadora, a young woman who drowned in the Nile in the 2nd century AD, whose mummy remains in the tomb.
- The animal catacombs, long underground galleries that held huge numbers of mummified ibises and baboons offered to Thoth.
The nearby Mallawi Museum, opened in 1963, displays finds from Hermopolis and Tuna el-Gebel, including animal mummies and statues of Thoth. It was looted in August 2013, when around 1,000 objects were stolen or damaged, and reopened in 2016 after restoration. Our Tell el-Amarna and Tuna el-Gebel tour from Cairo from USD 115 covers both sides of the river in one trip.

Monasteries, Mosques and Lesser-Known Sites
Minya's history did not end with the pharaohs. Its Christian and Islamic monuments are just as important to local people, and many attract pilgrims from across Egypt.
The Monastery of the Virgin Mary at Gebel el-Tair, on a cliff above the east bank near Samalut, about 25 km north of Minya, is one of the stops on the journey of the Holy Family in Egypt. Tradition says its rock-cut church was founded by Empress Helena, mother of Constantine, in the 4th century AD, and a large annual festival brings thousands of pilgrims. Deir Abu Fana, west of Mallawi, keeps a church that dates back to around the 6th century. Our page on Coptic sites in Egypt lists more.
Minya's Islamic heritage includes the Al-Amrawi Mosque, often dated to the Fatimid era, and the mosque of Sheikh Ubadah ibn al-Samit, one of the companions of the Prophet. See our page on Islamic sites in Egypt for the country's best-known mosques.
If you have extra time, two smaller sites reward the effort. The Fraser Tombs near Tihna el-Gebel, north of Minya, are rock-cut tombs of the 4th and 5th Dynasties, named after the surveyor George Fraser. Across the river from Minya, Zawyet el-Amwat holds a vast traditional cemetery and the remains of a small Old Kingdom step pyramid.

Planning Your Visit: Tickets, Getting There and Tours
Getting there. Trains leave Cairo's Ramses Station and Giza Station several times a day and take about 3.5 to 4.5 hours to Minya. By road, the drive takes about 3.5 to 4 hours on the Western Desert Road. Some long Nile cruises and dahabiyas between Cairo and Luxor also stop near Beni Hassan and Amarna, following the Nile through Middle Egypt.
How long to stay. One long day can cover Beni Hassan and Amarna, or Amarna and Tuna el-Gebel, but two days lets you see all four main sites without rushing. Minya has a handful of hotels along the Corniche, most of them simple and mid-range.
Safety and escorts. Foreign visitors in Minya are sometimes accompanied by a tourist police escort, especially when traveling by road between sites. This is routine and can slow your plans, which is one reason many travelers book a guided tour with a local driver.
When to go. October to April is the best season, since summer highs often approach 40°C and most sites have little shade.
Combining Minya with other regions. North of Minya, the Fayoum attractions and the Meidum Pyramid make good stops on the drive from Cairo. Further south, the Temple of Seti I at Abydos and the Temple of Dendera lead you on toward Luxor, which makes a Cairo to Luxor journey through Middle Egypt a rewarding way to travel.
