While snow falls across Europe and North America, the sun still rises warm over the Nile, the Red Sea stays blue and inviting, and the temples of Upper Egypt glow gold by mid-morning. That is why winter is the favorite season to visit Egypt, and why so many travelers come back year after year to escape the cold.
Everyone will get to know the best winter destinations in Egypt for warm-weather travel, starting with a temperature table so you can compare places at a glance. It then moves from the warmest south, around Aswan and Luxor, to the Red Sea resorts and Sinai, and finally to the cooler north, before ending with events, packing tips and sample routes. Here are all things you need to know about Egypt's best winter destinations:

How Warm Is Egypt in Winter & What Are Temperatures by Destination
Egypt's winter runs from December to February, with late November and March acting as pleasant shoulder months. Rain is rare almost everywhere except the Mediterranean coast, and most days are clear and sunny. The big surprise for many visitors is the gap between day and night: a warm afternoon in the desert can drop to single figures after sunset.
As a rule, the further south you travel, the warmer it gets. The table below shows approximate average winter conditions. For a month-by-month picture, see our guide to weather in Egypt along the year.
| Destination | Daytime high | Night low | Sea temperature | Winter feel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aswan and Abu Simbel | 23 to 26°C | 9 to 12°C | n/a | Warmest, dry and sunny |
| Luxor | 22 to 25°C | 6 to 9°C | n/a | Warm days, cold early mornings |
| Marsa Alam | 23 to 25°C | 14 to 16°C | 23 to 24°C | Warmest beach destination |
| Sharm El Sheikh | 22 to 24°C | 14 to 16°C | 22 to 24°C | Sunny, mild evenings |
| Hurghada and El Gouna | 21 to 23°C | 11 to 14°C | 22 to 23°C | Sunny, often breezy |
| Dahab | 21 to 23°C | 12 to 14°C | 22 to 23°C | Relaxed, windy days |
| Cairo and Giza | 19 to 21°C | 9 to 11°C | n/a | Mild days, cool nights |
| Alexandria | 18 to 20°C | 10 to 12°C | 17 to 18°C | Cooler, some rain |
| Siwa Oasis | 19 to 21°C | 4 to 7°C | n/a | Warm sun, very cold nights |
These are averages, so expect the occasional cooler or warmer spell. January is usually the coolest month, as our guide to January weather in Egypt explains.

Aswan and Abu Simbel: Egypt's Warmest Winter Sun
If one place deserves the title of Egypt's winter capital, it is Aswan. Since the 19th century, European travelers have wintered here in grand Nile-side hotels, and the reason has not changed: dry air, blue skies and afternoons warm enough for short sleeves.
Aswan is best enjoyed slowly. Take a boat to Philae Temple, the island sanctuary of Isis, then sail a felucca at sunset around Elephantine Island and Kitchener's Island, home to the Aswan Botanical Garden. A visit to a colorful Nubian village on the west bank adds music, spiced tea and painted houses to the trip.
About 280 km to the south, Abu Simbel is the warmest major site in Egypt in winter. Twice a year, the rising sun reaches deep into the Great Temple of Ramesses II to light the statues in its sanctuary. One of these dates, 22 February, falls in winter, and the Abu Simbel Sun Festival draws crowds who arrive before dawn to watch it. Book this trip well in advance if you plan to attend.

Luxor and a Nile Cruise: Winter Sightseeing at Its Best
Luxor holds more ancient monuments than almost anywhere on Earth, and winter is the only season when you can explore them in full comfort. In summer, temperatures often pass 40°C, but in January a day at Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings feels more like a warm spring afternoon.
Mornings are cold, though, especially on the West Bank before sunrise. That is exactly when the Luxor hot air balloon ride takes off, drifting over the Temple of Hatshepsut and the green fields along the Nile, so bring a warm jacket for the flight. Winter skies are usually calm, which makes this the best season for ballooning.
The classic way to link Luxor and Aswan is a Nile river cruise, stopping at the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo on the way. Winter is the high season on the river, with sunny sun-deck afternoons and cool evenings. Our guide to the best time for a Nile river cruise explains how prices and crowds change through the year.

Red Sea Beaches in Winter: Marsa Alam, Hurghada and El Gouna
Egypt's Red Sea coast is one of the closest places to Europe where you can still swim in December. Sea temperatures stay around 22°C to 24°C through winter, cooler than summer but comfortable for snorkeling, especially with a thin wetsuit or rash guard.
Marsa Alam is the warmest of the Red Sea resorts in winter, sitting further south than Hurghada and closer to the tropics. Its reefs are quieter, and Abu Dabbab bay is known for green turtles grazing in shallow water. Inland, Wadi El Gemal National Park offers desert valleys and mangroves to explore on calmer, cooler days.
Hurghada is the most popular winter beach base, with direct flights from many European cities, a long line of resorts and easy boat trips to the Giftun Islands. Afternoon winds can be strong in winter, which is bad news for sunbathing but excellent for kitesurfing. Nearby El Gouna, built around lagoons and canals, is a favorite for couples and kitesurfers, with a marina full of restaurants that stay lively through the season.
For a quieter stay, Sahl Hasheesh and Makadi Bay, south of Hurghada, offer resorts with their own reefs and calm, sheltered beaches.

Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab and Sinai: Sea, Mountains and Bedouin Nights
At the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, Sharm El Sheikh enjoys some of the mildest winter evenings on the coast, with nights rarely falling below 14°C. It is the gateway to Ras Mohammed National Park, where coral walls and clear water make for excellent winter diving and snorkeling, and to the reefs of the Straits of Tiran.
About 90 km north, Dahab trades big resorts for a relaxed seafront of cafés, yoga studios and dive centers. Its shore reefs, including the famous Blue Hole, are reached straight from the beach, and its steady winds attract windsurfers. Further north, Nuweiba and Taba offer simple beach camps and views of the mountains across the Gulf of Aqaba.
Winter is also the season to climb Mount Sinai, but go prepared. The summit stands at about 2,285 meters, and temperatures before sunrise can drop below freezing in January, with occasional snow. Pack gloves, a hat and a heavy jacket, and pair the climb with a visit to the Monastery of Saint Catherine at the foot of the mountain.

Cairo, Alexandria and the Oases: Cooler Choices With Big Rewards
The north of Egypt is not a beach destination in winter, but it is at its most comfortable for sightseeing. In Cairo, days of around 20°C are perfect for walking the Giza Plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Islamic Cairo and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar without the summer heat.
Alexandria is the coolest and wettest major city in winter, with most of its rain falling between November and February. Still, a sunny morning on the Corniche, a seafood lunch and visits to Qaitbay Citadel and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina make it a rewarding side trip from Cairo.
Winter is also the best season for Egypt's deserts and oases. Faiyum Oasis, less than two hours from Cairo, offers Lake Qarun, the waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan and the fossil whales of Wadi El Hitan. Further west, Siwa Oasis has warm, golden days, hot springs and salt lakes, but nights can fall close to freezing. The same is true of an overnight safari to Bahariya and the White Desert, where you camp under some of the clearest skies in the country with a good sleeping bag and a campfire.

Planning a Winter Trip to Egypt: Events, Packing and Routes
Book early. Winter is Egypt's peak season, and demand peaks between Christmas and New Year. Nile cruises, balloon flights, Abu Simbel trips and popular hotels can sell out weeks in advance, and prices are highest in late December.
Winter events to plan around:
- Christmas and New Year. Hotels and cruise ships host gala dinners, and Cairo's churches hold midnight services. Read how to celebrate Christmas in Egypt for ideas.
- Coptic Christmas, 7 January. Egypt's Coptic Christians celebrate with church services and family feasts, and it is a public holiday.
- Abu Simbel Sun Festival, 22 February. The winter solar alignment at the Great Temple.
Pack in layers. Bring T-shirts and light trousers for the day, a fleece or warm jacket for evenings, sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen, as the winter sun is still strong. Add swimwear and a windproof layer for the Red Sea, and warm clothes for the desert or Mount Sinai. Our list of what to pack for an Egypt vacation has a full checklist.
Sample winter routes:
| Trip length | Suggested route | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | Cairo, then a Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan | First-time visitors |
| 10 days | Cairo, Nile cruise, then 3 nights in Hurghada or Marsa Alam | History plus beach |
| 14 days | Cairo, Alexandria, Nile cruise, Abu Simbel and Sharm El Sheikh | Seeing everything |
| 7 days | Cairo, Faiyum and Siwa or the White Desert | Desert lovers |
Daylight is shorter in winter, with sunset around 5 pm in Cairo, so start sightseeing early and save evenings for dinners, sound and light shows and the bazaars.
