Imagine a dinner lit only by candles, beside a salt lake that turns pink at sunset, under a sky crowded with stars. That is what luxury looks like in Siwa Oasis, the remote corner of Egypt near the Libyan border, where the finest hotels are built from mud, salt and palm wood rather than glass and marble.
This guide covers the best 5-star hotels in Siwa Oasis, starting with what "five-star" really means here, then the top luxury ecolodges, boutique and heritage stays, a comparison table, and how to plan your trip. Here are all things you need to know about the best luxury hotels in Siwa:

Does Siwa Have 5-Star Hotels & What Luxury Means in the Oasis
Siwa has no international hotel chains and very few properties with an official five-star rating from Egypt's Ministry of Tourism. Booking sites do list several Siwa hotels as "five-star," but these labels are often chosen by the hotels themselves, so read them as a guide to comfort rather than an official grade.
What Siwa offers instead is a style of luxury found almost nowhere else. Its best lodges are built from kershef, a traditional mix of salt rock and mud that keeps rooms cool in summer and warm in winter. Furniture is made from palm wood and olive trees, food is grown in the lodge's own gardens, and silence is part of the service.
Before you book, check three things:
- Electricity. Some top lodges have no electricity at all, using candles and oil lamps, while others rely on solar power that may be limited at night.
- Air-conditioning. Many ecolodges have none, which is fine from October to April but hard in summer.
- What is included. The most expensive lodges include all meals, drinks and excursions, so the nightly rate can be better value than it first appears.
Our list of top luxury places to explore in Egypt and our guide on how to enjoy a luxury holiday in Egypt explains how Siwa fits into a wider high-end itinerary.

Adrère Amellal: Siwa's Most Famous Luxury Ecolodge
Adrère Amellal means "White Mountain" in the local Amazigh language, and the lodge sits at the foot of that pale ridge on the shore of Lake Siwa, about 16 km from Siwa town. It was created by the Egyptian environmentalist Mounir Neamatalla and is widely seen as one of the pioneers of luxury ecotourism in the Middle East.
The lodge has fewer than 40 rooms and suites, each built by hand from kershef, with salt-block walls, palm-beam ceilings and handmade textiles. There is no electricity in the rooms or common areas. At night, the whole property glows with hundreds of candles and lanterns, while hot water still runs in the bathrooms and devices can be charged on request.
| Room type | Approximate price per night |
|---|---|
| Standard Desert Room | From about USD 640 for one guest, USD 840 for two |
| Special Desert Room | About USD 1,045 |
| Salt Suite | About USD 1,845 |
Rates are all-inclusive, covering meals prepared from the lodge's organic gardens, wine, local beer and spirits, and often desert excursions. Each meal is served in a different setting, from rooftop terraces to the shores of the lake. Guests can swim in a spring-fed pool, climb the White Mountain in about 20 minutes for sunset, and visit the lodge's gallery of black-and-white photographs by Lee Miller.
Over the years, the lodge has hosted royalty and celebrities, reportedly including King Charles III, then the Prince of Wales, during his visit to Egypt in 2006. It suits couples, honeymooners and anyone who wants complete disconnection, and it pairs well with our Egypt honeymoon packages. Our page of romantic things to do in Egypt includes more ideas for couples.

Other Top Luxury and Boutique Stays in Siwa
If Adrère Amellal is beyond your budget, several other lodges offer exceptional comfort, often with more modern facilities.
Taziry Ecolodge. Built on the shore of Lake Siwa below the Red Mountain, west of town, Taziry has about 30 rooms in a style inspired by Amazigh villages. Its name means "full moon" in Siwi. Like Adrère Amellal, it uses candles and oil lamps at night, and it has a natural spring pool, a lake-view terrace and a restaurant serving Siwan and North African dishes. Prices usually fall between about USD 60 and 200 a night, depending on the room and season.
Siwa Shali Resort. For travelers who want a more conventional resort, this property south of town has single-story mud-brick bungalows and suites, an air-conditioned restaurant, a spa and a long spring-fed pool that winds about 180 m through the gardens. It sits far from the town center, so a car or transfer is useful. It is one of the few options in Siwa with full electricity and resort-style facilities.
Ghaliet Ecolodge and Spa. Close to Siwa town and the salt lakes, Ghaliet is a small boutique lodge with a spa and rooms that combine local design with modern comfort. Its location makes it easy to reach Shali and the markets.
Newer boutique lodges. Booking sites rate several newer properties very highly, including Tanirt Ecolodge, Siwa Palace Lodge, Meddur Siwa Oasis and Breezy Island Hotel, many with pools and guest scores above 9 out of 10. They are smaller and less established, but they offer good comfort for between about USD 40 and 125 a night.
Talist Ecolodge. This family-run lodge and farm has 11 bungalows, a natural pool and meals made from its own produce. Power is solar and limited, so it suits travelers who want quiet and simplicity more than modern luxury.

Heritage Stays in the Heart of Siwa Town
Some of Siwa's most memorable stays are not resorts at all, but restored old houses inside or beside the town's historic core.
Albabenshal Heritage Lodge sits within the ruins of Shali, the fortress town built of kershef in the 13th century. Its rooms are spread over several levels of restored Siwan houses, linked by narrow alleys, and its roof terrace looks over the ruins and palm groves. It is run by the same group as Adrère Amellal, but at a fraction of the price.
Shali Lodge, a short walk from the town center, is another sister property, with about 20 rooms around a courtyard and palm trees growing through the ceiling of its lounge. Both lodges use fans instead of air-conditioning and are best from October to April.
These heritage stays suit travelers who want to step out of the door into Siwa's daily life, its market, donkey carts and evening tea houses, rather than spend the day inside a resort.

Getting to Siwa and What to See From Your Hotel
Siwa lies about 300 km south of Marsa Matruh on the Mediterranean coast, and the drive from Cairo takes about 8 to 9 hours via the coastal road. Many travelers break the journey in Alexandria or stop at El Alamein on the way, as on our El Alamein tour. Our 6-day luxury holiday in Cairo and Alexandria makes a comfortable start before heading into the desert. Siwa has a small airport, but it handles mainly charter and private flights, so most guests arrive by road with a private transfer.
From your hotel, the main sights are a short drive or bike ride away:
- Shali, the old salt-brick town at the center of Siwa, best at sunset.
- The Temple of the Oracle of Amun, one of the most unusual ancient Egyptian temples, where Alexander the Great came to consult the oracle in 331 BC.
- Gebel el-Mawta, the "Mountain of the Dead," with painted ancient Egyptian tombs.
- Cleopatra's Spring, named after Queen Cleopatra, and the salt lakes, where you can float in water saltier than the sea.
- The Great Sand Sea, for 4x4 dune trips, sandboarding and hot springs among the dunes, one of the great landscapes of Egypt's deserts.
Many lodges arrange desert dinners and overnight camps, and our guides to camping spots in Egypt and stargazing in Egypt explain why Siwa's night sky is so special.
The best season runs from October to April, as our guide to the best time to visit Egypt explains. Summer days often pass 40°C, which is hard in lodges without air-conditioning. Pack a warm layer for winter nights, a torch for candlelit lodges and good walking shoes, as our Egypt packing guide explains, and read our Egypt travel tips before you go. Our 8-day Cairo, Alexandria and Siwa tour from USD 820 includes transfers and hotels, If you have more time, the Bahariya Oasis and the White Desert make a natural second desert stop, and our Egypt desert tours cover the other Egyptian oases too.
