When the summer sun beats down on the desert, Egyptians do what they have done for generations: they head for the sea. From the white sands of the Mediterranean to the coral reefs of the Red Sea, Egypt has some of the most beautiful summer coastlines in the world, and a few cooler corners in the mountains and oases for those who want a break from the heat.

It starts with a temperature table, then moves through the Mediterranean coast, the Red Sea resorts and South Sinai, before showing how to enjoy Cairo and Luxor in the heat and how to plan your summer trip. How Hot Is Egypt in Summer & Where to Go to Stay Cool
Egypt's summer runs from June to September, with July and August the hottest months. Rain is almost unknown, skies are clear every day, and the main difference between regions is how close you are to the sea. The Nile Valley in the south bakes in dry heat, while the coasts stay several degrees cooler thanks to sea breezes.
The table below shows approximate average conditions in July and August. For a full year of data, see our guide to weather in Egypt along the year.
| Destination | Daytime high | Night low | Sea temperature | Summer feel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alexandria | 30 to 31°C | 22 to 24°C | 26 to 27°C | Humid, breezy, coolest city |
| Marsa Matrouh and El Alamein | 29 to 31°C | 21 to 23°C | 25 to 27°C | Coolest beaches in Egypt |
| Hurghada and El Gouna | 33 to 35°C | 24 to 26°C | 27 to 28°C | Hot, windy afternoons |
| Marsa Alam | 33 to 35°C | 25 to 27°C | 28 to 29°C | Hot, warmest sea |
| Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab | 35 to 37°C | 26 to 28°C | 27 to 28°C | Hot, dry, warm nights |
| Saint Catherine | Around 30°C | Around 17°C | n/a | Cool mountain nights |
| Cairo | 34 to 36°C | 22 to 24°C | n/a | Hot and dusty |
| Luxor and Aswan | 40 to 42°C | 24 to 27°C | n/a | Very hot, dry |
These are averages, and heatwaves can push inland temperatures past 45°C. The simple rule is to spend most of your summer days near the water.

The Mediterranean Coast: Alexandria, El Alamein and Marsa Matrouh
The North Coast, known to Egyptians as El Sahel, is the country's favorite summer playground. Its beaches have soft white sand and turquoise water, and summer highs rarely pass 31°C, which makes it the coolest beach region in Egypt.
Alexandria is the gateway, about three hours from Cairo by train or road. Its city beaches, such as Mamoura and the grounds of Montaza Palace, are lively with local families in July and August. The real pleasure is the seafront itself: an evening walk along the Corniche, fresh fish in a harbor restaurant and a visit to the Qaitbay Citadel, built in the 15th century on the site of the ancient Pharos lighthouse.
About 105 km west of Alexandria, El Alamein combines beaches with history. The cemeteries and war museum recall the battles of 1942, while resorts such as Marassi and the new city of New Alamein have long sandy beaches and summer concerts. You can visit the memorials on an El Alamein tour from Alexandria.
Further west, Marsa Matrouh has some of the clearest water on the Mediterranean. Agiba Beach, about 24 km west of town, sits in a small cove beneath limestone cliffs, while Cleopatra's Bath is a rock pool where legend says the queen once swam. Waves and currents can be strong on this coast, so always swim where lifeguards are present and respect red flags.

The Red Sea Riviera: Hurghada, El Gouna, Soma Bay and Marsa Alam
The mainland Red Sea coast is hotter than the north, but its water is warm, calm in sheltered bays and full of coral. A steady northerly wind blows most afternoons, which takes the edge off the heat and makes the region one of the best kitesurfing spots in the world.
Hurghada is the most popular choice for families, with all-inclusive resorts, water parks and easy boat trips to the Giftun Islands, Orange Bay and Mahmya. Our guide to the beaches in Hurghada helps you choose between public beaches, resort sections and island trips, and a snorkeling trip in Hurghada is the best way to spend a hot morning.
North of Hurghada, El Gouna is built around lagoons, with kitesurfing centers, a marina full of restaurants and a younger crowd. To the south, Makadi Bay and Sahl Hasheesh offer quieter resorts on their own beaches, while Soma Bay is known for golf, spas and consistent wind.
Marsa Alam is the wildest and least crowded part of the coast. Here you can snorkel with green turtles at Abu Dabbab, spot spinner dolphins on a reef trip and visit Sharm El Luli, a lagoon of pale sand and turquoise water inside the Wadi El Gemal protected area. Summer is also whale shark season in the south, although sightings are never guaranteed.

South Sinai: Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab and the Gulf of Aqaba
Sinai is the hottest of the beach regions, but its reefs are the finest in Egypt, and the dry air feels more comfortable than the humidity of the north.
Sharm El Sheikh has resorts for every budget, from busy Naama Bay to quieter hotels with private reefs at Ras Um Sid and Sharks Bay. A day at Ras Mohammed National Park, Egypt's first national park, is a summer highlight, and our Ras Mohammed tour from Sharm El Sheikh takes you to its best reefs by road or boat.
About 90 km north, Dahab is a relaxed town of cafés, yoga studios and shore reefs such as the Lighthouse and the famous Blue Hole. Its strong winds suit windsurfing, and its laid-back pace makes it a favorite with backpackers and divers. Further north, Nuweiba and Taba have quiet beach camps where you sleep in huts on the sand and wake to views of the Saudi mountains across the gulf.

Cooler Escapes Away From the Coast: Saint Catherine and Faiyum
Not every summer escape needs a beach. At about 1,600 meters above sea level, the town of Saint Catherine is one of the coolest places in Egypt in summer, with nights that can drop below 20°C. Visit the Monastery of Saint Catherine and join the night climb on our Mount Sinai hiking trail, which reaches the 2,285-meter summit in time for sunrise, the coolest and most magical hour of the day.
Closer to Cairo, Faiyum Oasis is about 100 km southwest of the city. It is not cool in the afternoon, but Lake Qarun, the waterfalls and lakes of Wadi El Rayan and the shady pottery village of Tunis make it a pleasant weekend away, especially if you swim, kayak or sandboard in the early morning and late afternoon.
For a quick sea break from the capital, Ain Sokhna on the Gulf of Suez is about two hours' drive from Cairo. Its resorts offer day passes, sandy beaches and warm Red Sea water, making it the easiest beach escape for a weekend.

Learn How to Visit Cairo and Luxor in Summer
Yes, and there are real advantages. Summer is Egypt's low season for international visitors, so the pyramids, temples and tombs are quieter, and many hotels and tours offer lower prices. The secret is to plan your day around the heat.
- Start early. Most major sites open around 6:00 am in Luxor and 8:00 am in Cairo. Be at the gates on time and finish outdoor visits before 11:00 am.
- Rest at midday. Use the hottest hours from noon to 4:00 pm for air-conditioned museums, a long lunch or the hotel pool.
- Go out at night. Evening is when Egypt comes alive. Try our ideas for things to do in Cairo at night, from Nile dinner cruises to the bazaars of Khan el-Khalili.
- Choose a cruise. A Nile river cruise between Luxor and Aswan lets you visit temples at dawn and dusk and spend the hot hours on board with a pool and air-conditioning.
In Luxor, the West Bank tombs are best visited first thing in the morning, while the Luxor Temple is beautifully lit after dark. Our list of things to do in Luxor at night includes the Karnak Sound and Light Show and evening felucca rides. A popular summer route combines three or four days of sightseeing with a week on the Red Sea, using a short domestic flight or the road from Luxor to Hurghada.

Planning a Summer Beach Holiday in Egypt: Prices, Crowds and Packing
Prices and crowds. For international travelers, summer is often the cheapest time to book Red Sea resorts and Nile cruises. The exception is the North Coast and Alexandria, which fill with Egyptian families in July and August, when prices there are at their highest. Public holidays such as Eid al-Adha, whose date moves each year with the Islamic calendar, also bring busy beaches and higher prices across the country.
Packing. Bring light cotton or linen clothes, a wide-brimmed hat, UV sunglasses, high-factor and reef-safe sunscreen, a refillable water bottle and water shoes for coral beaches. Cover your shoulders and knees when you leave the resort. Our full list of what to pack for an Egypt vacation covers the rest.
Staying safe in the heat.
- Drink at least two to three liters of water a day, and more on excursions.
- Try local drinks such as karkadeh, a chilled hibiscus tea, and fresh sugarcane juice.
- Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, headache and nausea, and rest in the shade if you feel unwell.
- On the Mediterranean, swim only at lifeguarded beaches. On the Red Sea, never touch coral and wear a rash guard to avoid sunburn while snorkeling.
