Aswan sits at the far southern end of Egypt's Nile valley, about 880 km from Cairo by road and rail. You can reach it by plane in little more than an hour, by sleeper train overnight, by day train or Talgo, by long-distance bus, or by private car with a driver. Each choice trades time against money, and some let you stop at Luxor, Edfu or Kom Ombo on the way.
The journey follows the Nile almost the whole way, past sugar cane fields, mud-brick villages and the sandstone cliffs that once fed the temples of the pharaohs. This guide explains how each option works in practice: where it leaves from, how long it takes, what it costs and who it suits best. It also covers how to break the trip and what to do when you arrive in Aswan.
Here are all things you need to know about traveling from Cairo to Aswan:

Time, Price and Comfort of Traveling From Cairo to Aswan
The two cities are roughly 680 km apart in a straight line, but the railway and the roads follow the river and stretch the trip to about 880 km.
| Option | Time on the move | Approximate price (one way) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flight | About 1 hr 20 min (4 to 5 hrs door to door) | USD 45 to 130 | Short trips, tight schedules |
| Sleeper train | About 13.5 to 14 hrs | USD 100 to 170 per person | Comfort, saving a hotel night |
| Day train or Talgo | About 11 to 14 hrs | USD 65 to 120 via online agents | Scenery, flexible budgets |
| Bus | About 13 to 14 hrs | USD 15 to 25 | Lowest cost |
| Private car with driver | About 10 to 12 hrs | USD 200 to 350 per vehicle | Groups, stops on the way |
Prices move with the season. From October to April, the busy months in Upper Egypt, sleeper cabins and cheap flights sell out first, so book those two as early as you can. Our guide to the best time to visit Aswan explains why the cooler months are so popular.

The Sleeper Train: Overnight From Cairo to Aswan
The Abela sleeper train, sold as Watania in some guides, is the classic way to make this trip. You board in Cairo in the evening, eat dinner in your cabin, sleep through Middle Egypt, and wake up near Luxor. The train continues south and reaches Aswan by late morning.
Since October 2024, the sleeper no longer leaves from Ramses Station. It departs from Bashtil, also called the Cairo Upper Egypt station, in the Imbaba area about 7 km west of Ramses, and some passengers board at Giza station instead. Recent timetables show two departures:
| Train | Leaves Cairo (Bashtil) | Arrives Aswan |
|---|---|---|
| 86 | 19:45 | 09:25 next day |
| 82 | 21:10 | 11:10 next day |
Each cabin is private and lockable, with two berths, a small sink and storage for luggage. Shared toilets sit at the end of each carriage, and a steward makes up the beds around 22:00. Dinner and breakfast are included and served in the cabin, though reviewers often say the food is plain, so many travelers bring snacks.
There are two classes, Standard and Elite, with the Elite cabins refurbished more recently. Booked direct with Abela, fares run about USD 100 to 170 per person, depending on class and on whether you share a cabin or take one alone.
How to book:
- Online at Abela's own site, choosing the foreigner fare and paying by card.
- Through agents such as 12Go, Bookaway or Trains Egypt.
- In person at the Abela office near Ramses Station, paying in US dollars, euros or pounds sterling.
Tickets are digital, so you only need to show the QR code on your phone and your passport. Booking opens a few months ahead, and cabins can sell out weeks in advance around Christmas and Easter. For a wider look at Egypt's network, read our guide to railways and trains in Egypt.

Day Trains & Watching Upper Egypt Go By
If you would rather see the Nile valley than sleep through it, a day train is the most scenic way south. The line passes Minya, Assiut, Sohag and Qena before reaching Luxor, then runs through Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo to Aswan.
Egyptian National Railways runs several daily services on this line, in air-conditioned first and second class. The fastest is the Talgo, a modern train that leaves Cairo in the evening and reaches Aswan in about 11 hours. Ordinary VIP and Special Express trains take around 12 to 14 hours, and delays of an hour or more are common.
Many of these trains leave from Ramses Station, though some Upper Egypt services now start at Bashtil, so check the station printed on your ticket. The main ways to buy are:
- Online agents such as 12Go, where foreigner fares run about USD 65 to 120 including fees.
- The ticket office at the station, where you pay a foreigner fare in US dollars and need your passport.
Take water, food and a light jacket, because the air conditioning can be strong at night.

Flying From Cairo to Aswan
Flying is the fastest option by far. EgyptAir runs several daily flights from Cairo International Airport to Aswan International Airport, and Air Cairo and Nesma Airlines add more on some days. The flight takes about 1 hour 20 minutes.
Fares start at around USD 45 when booked weeks ahead and usually sit between USD 80 and 130 closer to the date. Last-minute tickets in the busy season can cost much more. Domestic tickets normally include a checked bag, but allowances differ by fare, so check yours before you pack.
Door to door, plan on four to five hours once you add the drive to the airport in Cairo traffic, check-in and security, and the transfer at the other end. Our list of airports in Egypt covers the terminals and how to reach them.
Aswan airport sits about 16 km southwest of the city, near the High Dam, a drive of roughly 25 minutes. There is no public transport into town, so most travelers take a taxi, after agreeing the fare first, or a hotel transfer. Flying is also the natural choice if your main goal is Abu Simbel, since the temples are another 280 km south of Aswan.

By Bus or Private Car: The Long Road South
Overnight buses are the cheapest way to make this trip. Super Jet and El Eman Jet run air-conditioned coaches that leave Cairo in the evening, between about 17:30 and 20:30. They reach Aswan the next morning after 13 to 14 hours, with fares of about USD 15 to 25. Go Bus and the state-run Upper Egypt Bus Company also serve the route.
Expect a long night with rest stops and several police checkpoints, where you may be asked to show your passport. Keep it within reach rather than in your main bag. Buses use several Cairo terminals, so confirm the departure point when you book.
A private car with a driver is the most flexible option, especially for families or small groups. The drive takes about 10 to 12 hours along the desert highway that runs west of the Nile valley. A licensed car and driver costs about USD 200 to 350 for the vehicle, depending on its size and whether you stop overnight.
Self-driving is possible but tiring, with long gaps between fuel stations and many signs in Arabic only. With a driver, you can ask to stop at Edfu Temple or Kom Ombo Temple instead of watching them pass by.

Splitting the Trip, Arriving in Aswan and Tours That Include Transport
Few journeys in Egypt pass so much history in a single day. Luxor lies about 215 km north of Aswan, roughly three hours by train, which makes it the natural place to break the trip. Spend a night or two there with our Luxor travel guide, then continue south by train, car or boat.
The most relaxing way to cover the last stretch is a Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan. Most cruises take three or four nights and stop at Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo, so you see the temples without changing hotels. Our Nile cruise travel guide and list of the best Nile cruise ships help you choose one, and a traditional dahabiya offers a slower, smaller option.
Arriving in Aswan:
- By train: Aswan Railway Station is at the northern edge of the city centre, a short walk or taxi ride from the Corniche and most hotels.
- By plane: Take a taxi or hotel transfer for the 25-minute drive into town.
- By bus: Ask the driver where the coach stops, as terminals change.
Ride-hailing apps have limited coverage in Aswan, so agree on a price before you get into a taxi. Our Aswan travel guide covers neighborhoods, hotels and getting around.
Once settled, most travelers start with a sunset felucca ride around Elephantine Island, then visit Philae Temple, the Unfinished Obelisk and the Aswan High Dam in one morning. Evenings are good for a Nubian village on the west bank. Our list of things to do in Aswan and our guide on how many days to spend in Aswan help you plan your stay. For a ready-made day out, book an Aswan sightseeing tour or a day trip from Aswan to Abu Simbel by car.
If you would rather leave all of this to someone else, several Trips In Egypt packages include the Cairo to Aswan journey, with flights or trains, transfers and a guide:
| Package | What it covers | From |
|---|---|---|
| Two Days Aswan and Abu Simbel Trip from Cairo | Aswan sights and Abu Simbel | USD 365 |
| 2 Days Luxor and Aswan Tours from Cairo | Highlights of both cities | USD 660 |
| 4 Days Cairo and Aswan Tour Package | Giza, Cairo and Aswan | USD 760 |
| 4 Days Nile Cruise from Cairo | Cruise between Luxor and Aswan | USD 765 |
| 5 Days Cairo, Aswan and Abu Simbel Tour | Cairo, Aswan and Abu Simbel | USD 900 |
| 6 Days Cairo, Luxor and Aswan Tour Package | All three cities | USD 1,100 |
Listed prices are per person for group sizes set on each tour page, so solo travelers and couples usually pay a little more.
