Hurghada sits on the shore of the Red Sea about 460 km southeast of Cairo, and the journey between them is one of the most traveled routes in Egypt. Most visitors who come for the Giza Pyramids also want a few days of coral reefs and sunshine, and there are three ways to make the trip: by air, by bus or by car.
The road from the capital runs through empty desert and along the mountains of the Eastern Desert until the sea turns turquoise beside it. This guide compares the flight, the bus and the drive, explains the route stage by stage, and shows which option suits your budget, your time and your group. Here are all things you need to know about how to travel from Cairo to Hurghada:

Discover How Far Is Hurghada From Cairo
Hurghada is about 460 km from central Cairo by road, depending on where you start and which part of Hurghada you are heading for. Unlike Luxor and Aswan, Hurghada has no railway line, so the train is not an option. Our guide to trains in Egypt explains where the network goes.
| Option | Time | Typical cost | Door to door |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flight | about 1 hour in the air | $60 to $170 one way | about 3.5 hours |
| Go Bus or other coach | 6 to 7 hours | $8 to $16 | 7 to 8 hours |
| Private car with driver | 5 to 6 hours | $70 to $160 per car | 5 to 6 hours |
| Self-drive | 5 to 6 hours | rental plus fuel and tolls | 5 to 6 hours |
The surprise in the table is the last column. Once you add the drive to Cairo Airport, check-in and the transfer at the other end, a flight saves only two or three hours over a private car that picks you up at your hotel.

Flying From Cairo to Hurghada
Flying is the fastest way to get from Cairo to Hurghada. EgyptAir, Air Cairo, Nile Air and Nesma Airlines fly the route between Cairo International Airport and Hurghada International Airport, with several departures a day. The flight takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes.
One-way fares usually run from about $60 to $170, depending on the season and how early you book. Prices peak during Christmas, Easter, Egyptian school holidays and the Eid holidays, when Cairenes head for the coast.
Plan for the ground time at both ends:
- In Cairo. Allow 45 to 90 minutes to reach the airport, depending on traffic, and arrive at least 90 minutes before a domestic flight.
- In Hurghada. The airport is only about 5 km from the town center. Taxis and hotel transfers reach most resorts on the Sheraton Road, Sakkala and Village Road in 10 to 25 minutes, and El Gouna in about 30.
Hurghada's airport is one of the busiest in Egypt and also receives direct charter flights from Europe, so many travelers fly into Hurghada, then visit Cairo on a side trip. Our guide to airports in Egypt covers all of them.

Cairo to Hurghada by Bus
The bus is the cheapest way to travel from Cairo to Hurghada, and the main companies run modern, air-conditioned coaches with assigned seats.
Go Bus has the most departures, with buses leaving day and night. Its classes, from cheapest to most comfortable, are:
| Go Bus class | Typical fare | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Classic and Deluxe | about $8 to $10 | Reclining seats, air conditioning |
| Elite and Elite Plus | about $12 to $16 | Wider seats, more legroom, Wi-Fi |
| Elite Double Decker | about $16 | Upper deck, the best views of the coast |
Coaches leave from several Cairo stops, including Downtown near Tahrir, Ramses and the eastern districts, so pick the one closest to your hotel when you book online or in the app. Upper Egypt Bus Company leaves from Turgoman station near Downtown for about $12, and smaller companies such as Golden Horse and Blue Bus are slightly cheaper and more basic.
The ride takes 6 to 7 hours with one rest stop, usually near Ain Sokhna or Zafarana. Most buses arrive at the company terminals in El Dahar, the old town of Hurghada, and a taxi to the resorts costs a few dollars.
A few tips make the bus trip easier:
- Travel by day. A morning bus shows you the mountains and the sea. Night buses save a hotel night but arrive tired.
- Bring a layer. The air conditioning is cold, even in summer.
- Keep your passport handy. Police checkpoints on the coast road sometimes check IDs.
- Book ahead on holidays. Buses during Eid and the summer sell out days in advance.
Driving or Private Transfer: The Red Sea Road Step by Step
A car is the most flexible way to travel from Cairo to Hurghada. The drive takes 5 to 6 hours, and a private car with driver costs about $70 to $160 per vehicle one way, depending on its size. For a family of four, that is often cheaper per person than flying.
The route follows good, divided highways almost all the way. These distances are approximate:
| Stage | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Cairo to Ain Sokhna on the Cairo-Sokhna road | about 120 km | 1.5 hours |
| Ain Sokhna to Zafarana on the Galala and coast road | about 70 km | 50 minutes |
| Zafarana to Ras Gharib along the Gulf of Suez | about 120 km | 1.5 hours |
| Ras Gharib to Hurghada | about 155 km | 1.5 to 2 hours |
The Cairo-Sokhna road has a toll gate, and the coast road beyond it passes wind farms, oil fields and long empty beaches between the Red Sea Mountains and the water. Ain Sokhna, about two hours from Cairo, is the natural place for coffee and a stretch, and many travelers break the journey there.
From Zafarana, a road of about 40 km leads inland to the Monastery of St Anthony, founded in the 4th century and one of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world. With a private driver, it makes an unforgettable two-hour detour.
If you plan to drive yourself, keep these points in mind:
- Drive in daylight. The coast road has few lights, and trucks and the occasional camel are hard to see at night.
- Fill up before the desert. Fuel stations are spread out between Zafarana and Ras Gharib.
- Watch your speed. Radar cameras are common, and the limit on most of the road is around 90 to 100 km/h.
- Carry your passport and car papers. There are several police checkpoints, and you will be asked where you are going.
A private transfer with Trips In Egypt includes an air-conditioned car, a licensed driver, tolls and pickup at your hotel door, with stops wherever you like on the way.

Which Way to Travel From Cairo to Hurghada?
The best option depends on who you are traveling with and how much time you have.
Solo travelers on a budget. Take a daytime Go Bus in Elite class. At about $15, it costs less than a taxi ride across many European cities.
Couples short on time. Fly. You will spend less time in transit and arrive in time for an afternoon on the beach.
Families and small groups. A private car is usually the best value and the least stressful, with door-to-door service, space for luggage and stops when the children need them.
Travelers who want to see more. Drive, and add Ain Sokhna or the Monastery of St Anthony on the way.
