Three or four days in Cairo is enough to stand at the foot of the Great Pyramid, look Tutankhamun's gold mask in the eye, walk through a thousand years of Islamic architecture and bargain for brass lanterns at midnight. It is not enough to do it by wandering. Cairo is a city of more than 20 million people, and the gap between a smooth trip and a frustrating one is mostly about geography and timing.
The capital has outlived every dynasty that ruled it, and the stones still show it. This guide gives you a tested Cairo itinerary for 3 days, timed hour by hour, four ways to use a fourth day, every short Cairo tour Trips In Egypt runs, and the tickets and logistics that hold it together. Here are all things you need to know about how to spend 3 or 4 days in Cairo:

Is 3 or 4 Days in Cairo Enough?
Three full days is the sweet spot for most first-time visitors. It covers the four big zones of the city: the Giza Plateau on the western edge, the old necropolis of Saqqara and Memphis about 30 km to the south, the museums and churches of Old Cairo, and the medieval streets of Islamic Cairo around the Citadel. A fourth day turns the trip from a checklist into a real visit, with room for Alexandria, the quieter pyramids of Dahshur, or a slow afternoon on the Nile.
The secret is to give each day one part of the city. A taxi from Giza to Khan el-Khalili takes 45 minutes at dawn and well over an hour in the evening rush, so jumping between east and west twice in one day eats the time you came for. The plan below starts early, when the sites are cool and the roads are empty.

A 3-Day Cairo Itinerary, Hour by Hour
Day 1: The Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum
7:00 am: Be at the gate of the Giza Pyramids Complex when it opens. The first two hours are the coolest and the least crowded. Start with the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the only survivor of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and decide on the spot whether to buy the separate ticket to climb inside to the King's Chamber.
8:30 am: Ride or walk to the Panorama viewpoint for the classic shot of all nine pyramids, then drop down to the Great Sphinx and the granite Valley Temple of Khafre, where the king's body was prepared for burial.
11:00 am: Lunch near the plateau, then head about 2 km to the Grand Egyptian Museum. Plan at least three hours. The Grand Staircase is lined with royal statues, the Tutankhamun galleries show his complete burial treasure together for the first time, and Khufu's solar boat, 43 m long and some 4,500 years old, sits in its own hall. Book your timed slot online the day before.
Evening: A two-hour Nile dinner cruise with a buffet and a whirling Tanoura dancer is the easiest way to see the city lights without walking another step.
Day 2: Saqqara, Memphis and Old Cairo
8:00 am: Drive south to Saqqara, the burial ground of the old capital. The Step Pyramid of Djoser, designed by the architect Imhotep around 2670 BC, is the oldest large stone building in the world and about a century older than the Great Pyramid. Leave time for the painted Tomb of Mereruka and the Pyramid of Teti, whose walls carry some of the earliest religious texts ever carved inside a pyramid.
10:30 am: Ten minutes away lies Memphis, Egypt's first capital, founded around 3100 BC. Little of the city survives, but the open-air museum at Mit Rahina holds a fallen colossus of Ramses II, more than 10 m long, and an alabaster sphinx that weighs about 80 tons.
1:00 pm: Drive back north and stop for lunch. Try koshari, the rice, lentil and pasta dish that most Cairenes eat at least once a week.
2:30 pm: Walk into Coptic Cairo, where the Hanging Church is built over the gatehouse of the Roman fortress of Babylon. The Ben Ezra Synagogue and the Church of Abu Serga, where tradition says the Holy Family sheltered, are a few minutes' walk away. The churches have no ticket.
4:00 pm: Finish at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, five minutes up the road in Fustat. Its underground Royal Mummies Hall holds the kings and queens moved here in the Pharaohs' Golden Parade, including Ramses II and Hatshepsut.
Day 3: Tahrir, the Citadel and Islamic Cairo
9:00 am: Start at the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square. The Tutankhamun treasure has moved to Giza, but the old pink building still holds the Narmer Palette, the seated statue of Khafre in black diorite and the painted Meidum Geese.
11:30 am: Taxi to the Salah El-Din Citadel, the fortress built by Saladin in the 1170s. Inside, the Muhammad Ali Mosque with its Ottoman domes looks over the whole city.
1:30 pm: Walk downhill to the Sultan Hassan Mosque, one of the largest medieval mosques in the world, finished in 1363. Its open courtyard and four great arched halls take about 30 minutes. The Al-Rifai Mosque stands right beside it.
3:00 pm: Late lunch, then a short ride north to Al-Muizz Street. Walk from Bab al-Futuh south past the Qalawun Complex and the Beit al-Suhaymi house as the light turns gold on the stone.
6:00 pm: End in Khan el-Khalili, the bazaar founded in 1382. Shop for spices, silver and lamps, then drink mint tea at El Fishawy, a café that has served the alley since the late 18th century.

Day 4: Four Ways to Spend an Extra Day in Cairo
A fourth day is where Cairo starts to reward curiosity rather than stamina.
Dahshur's pyramids. About 40 km south of Giza, the pyramids of Sneferu, Khufu's father, show the Egyptians learning how to build. The Red Pyramid, 105 m high, is the first true smooth-sided pyramid, and you can climb down into its corbelled chambers with almost nobody else around. Next to it, the Bent Pyramid changes its angle halfway up, from about 54 to 43 degrees, and still keeps much of its original casing.
Alexandria. The Mediterranean city is about 220 km away, roughly three hours by road, so leave by 7 am. A day tour to Alexandria from Cairo usually covers the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, Pompey's Pillar, the Qaitbay Citadel on the site of the ancient lighthouse, a seafood lunch and the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
Fayoum and the desert. Two hours southwest, Wadi el-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where 40-million-year-old whale skeletons lie in the open sand. Most trips add Lake Qarun and the pottery village of Tunis.
A slow Cairo day. Sleep in, then walk the leafy streets of Zamalek on Gezira Island, ride the lift up the 187 m Cairo Tower, and take a sunset felucca on the Nile. In the evening, a Tanoura show in the old Wekalet El Ghouri caravanserai is one of the best cultural nights in the city.

Tickets, Getting Around and Where to Stay
| Site | Foreign adult ticket |
|---|---|
| Giza Plateau | EGP 700 |
| Inside the Great Pyramid | EGP 1,500 |
| Grand Egyptian Museum | EGP 1,570, rising to EGP 1,830 on 1 November |
| Egyptian Museum, Tahrir | about EGP 550 |
| Salah El-Din Citadel | about EGP 550 |
| Sultan Hassan Mosque | about EGP 220 |
| Coptic Cairo churches | free |
Pay by card. Most ticket offices take cards only, so keep cash for tips, taxis and the bazaar. The exchange rate sits at around EGP 52 to the US dollar.
Getting around. Uber, Careem and inDrive all work in Cairo. The metro is fast for Tahrir and Old Cairo, with fares of EGP 10 to 20, and the middle carriages are reserved for women. For Saqqara and Dahshur, a private driver or a guided tour is far easier than ride-hailing, because return cars are hard to find in the countryside.
Fridays and mosques. Mosques close to visitors during the Friday noon prayer, so do not schedule Islamic Cairo for a Friday morning. Women should bring a scarf, and everyone needs covered shoulders and knees.
Where to stay. For a 3-day Cairo itinerary, split or choose by priority. Giza hotels put you minutes from the pyramids and the GEM. Zamalek is quieter, greener and good for restaurants. Downtown and Garden City are central for Tahrir, the Citadel and the bazaar.
When to go. October to April is the most comfortable season, with daytime highs of about 20 to 28°C. In summer, start every day at 7 am and save the museums for the afternoon.
