The Giza Pyramids are a lasting expression of the power of the ancient Egyptian Pharaohs. The pyramids were constructed as tombs for the pharaohs, where they would be buried with their treasures to facilitate their journey to the afterlife. The pharaohs of the Old Kingdom from the 27th to the 22nd century BCE commissioned the building of the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx, the Valley Temple, and the Worker’s Village on a rocky plateau on the west bank of the Nile River.
The Great Pyramid
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only one of the ancient wonders that still stands today. The Pyramid has a height of 138 meters and a square base with sides measuring 230 meters each. It used to be even taller, at 146.5 meters, and was the tallest structure made by humans for 3,800 years. The Great Pyramid is surrounded by numerous other structures, including tombs for relatives, smaller pyramids for queens, two temples, and boats that were buried.
The Great Sphinx
The oldest colossal stone statue in Egypt is the Great Sphinx which was built around 2500 BC by the pharaoh Khafre. The Sphinx is 73 meters in length from its front legs to its tail and 20 meters in height from its base to the top of its head. The face of the statue is believed to depict Khafre himself, however, Although the nose and beard are now missing, the face is believed to represent Khafre. The Sphinx is aligned from west to east and looks eastward to the rising sun.
The Valley Temple
The Valley Temple of King Khafre is in much better shape and well-preserved compared to the temple of Khufu. The mortuary temple is located east of the Pyramid. It is bigger than the older temples and has all the features of later mortuary temples, such as a hall for entering, five recesses for the statues of the pharaohs, a court with columns, a holy chamber, and five rooms to store things.

The rulers of the new kingdom in 1500 BC chose this place as their final resting place, and that is how the Valley of the Kings came into being.
The Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut
The Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahri stands as a breathtaking testament to one of ancient Egypt’s most extraordinary rulers. Queen Hatshepsut, who reigned from 1507 to 1458 BC, defied conventions by becoming a female pharaoh, a rarity in Egypt’s long history. Long before the concept of feminism existed, she asserted her authority through grand architectural achievements, commissioning impressive monuments and statues that depicted her as a divine ruler. Her crowning achievement, the magnificent temple she built in the 15th century BC to honor both herself and her father, took over fifteen years to complete and remains one of the most iconic and well-preserved structures in Egypt today.
