These two identical enormous sculptures of Colossi of Memnon towered 23 meters in height, standing at the entrance of the ancient city of Thebes. The colossi of Amenhotep III (1391–1353 BC) are made of quartzite that was created in Cairo and then taken to Luxor to be the divine guardians of this blessed capital city. Across the colossi are about 107 Roman-era Latin carvings and Greek inscriptions that tell his life story, beliefs, and achievements.
