Abu Simbel Temples

Abu Simbel temples were commissioned by Ramses the Great (1303–1213 BC) in the 13th century BC These awe-inspiring temples were designed to commemorate his victory in the Battle of Kadesh, a historic conflict that led to the world’s first documented peace treaty. The larger temple is dedicated to the gods Amun, Ra-Horakhty, Ptah, and Ramses himself, while the smaller temple honors his beloved queen, Nefertari. A remarkable celestial event occurs twice a year (February 22 and October 22), when sunlight illuminates the inner sanctum, symbolizing the divine connection between Ramses and the gods.
