The Great Sphinx was built around the 26th century BC during the reign of Khafre who is believed to be the face of the statue.
The complex of Giza included the Valley Temple where the deceased and ceremonies took place. The soul of the deceased pharaoh received guidance and protection from goddesses in these rites. The temple complex had Hathor who showed her role as a protector and her connection to the afterlife. Hathor and Isis who were goddesses of cleansing have been called upon in these rites.
