How to Visit Karnak Temple Complex: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Visit Karnak Temple Complex: A Step-by-Step Guide

10 min read | Published: Oct 14, 2026 | Updated: Oct 14, 2026 | TRIPS IN EGYPT

Karnak Temple has always been the crown jewel of Thebes, aka Luxor, for the last millennium; this divine rose has safeguarded the soulful and artistic essence of the ancient Egyptians for ages and showcased it for all to see. For two thousand years, its gates welcomed only pharaohs and priests; today they open to anyone who knows how to reach them.

This guide explains how to visit Karnak Temple in practical steps: how to get there from wherever you are staying, whether to go alone or with a guide, what happens on the day from the ticket office to the Sacred Lake, and what to wear and bring. Here are all things you need to know about how to visit Karnak Temple:

Location and How to Get to Karnak Temple

Karnak stands on the East Bank of the Nile, about 3 km north of Luxor Temple and the city center. The main entrance and visitor center face the river on the Corniche road, so every driver in Luxor knows the way. Read our guide to Karnak Temple for its history before you go.

From a Hotel in Luxor (East Bank)

Option Time from the center Typical cost
Taxi 10 to 15 minutes EGP 80 to 100, agreed before you get in
Ride-hailing app (inDrive) 10 to 15 minutes Set in the app
Calèche (horse carriage) 20 to 30 minutes Agree the price and route first
Walking along the Corniche 35 to 45 minutes Free, but only in cool weather
Hotel or tour car 10 to 15 minutes Included in organized tours

Luxor taxis have no meters, so always agree on the fare first. Uber does not operate in Luxor, but inDrive does, and it is worth downloading before you arrive.

From the West Bank

If you are staying on the West Bank, near the Valley of the Kings, cross the river on the public ferry, which costs only a few pounds and runs all day. From the East Bank landing near Luxor Temple, take a taxi north to Karnak. You can also cross by motorboat or private car over the Luxor Bridge, south of the city.

From a Nile Cruise Ship

Most Nile River cruises moor on the Corniche in Luxor, a short drive from Karnak. Cruises that include sightseeing usually visit Karnak with a guide on the first or last day, with transport and tickets arranged. Check whether your cruise includes it before you book your own visit.

From Luxor Airport or the Train Station

Luxor International Airport lies east of the city, about 20 minutes by car from Karnak. The railway station sits in the center, about 3 km from the temple. Our guides to airports in Egypt and trains in Egypt explain both options.

From Hurghada and the Red Sea

Luxor is about 290 km from Hurghada, roughly four hours by road each way. Day trips leave very early, around 4:00 to 5:00 am, and usually combine Karnak with the West Bank before driving back the same evening. A two-day trip with a night in Luxor is far more relaxed. See our Hurghada excursions for options.

From Cairo

The fastest way from Cairo is a one-hour domestic flight. The overnight sleeper train takes about 9 to 10 hours and arrives in the morning, ready for a sunrise visit. Our 4 Days Cairo and Luxor Holiday Package combines the Pyramids with Karnak and the West Bank.

Choose How You Want to Visit Karnak Temple

Visiting Karnak Temple - Trips in Egypt.webp
Visiting Karnak Temple - Trips in Egypt.webp

There is no single right way to visit Karnak. The best choice depends on your budget, your interest in history, your time, and how much you want to organize yourself.

Way to visit Best for What to know
Independently Budget travelers and repeat visitors You buy your own ticket and transport; signage inside is limited
Local guide hired at the gate Travelers who want context without a tour Agree the price, length and language before you start
Private guided day tour First-time visitors and families Transport, tickets and an Egyptologist guide are arranged for you
Nile cruise excursion Cruise passengers Visit is timed around the ship's schedule, often in a group
Evening Sound and Light Show A second visit after dark It shows only part of the complex and does not replace a day visit

Visiting independently is simple, but Karnak has few information panels, and many visitors leave having seen the columns without understanding them. A good guidebook or audio guide helps.

A guided tour saves the most time. Our Luxor East Bank day trip, linked at the end of this guide, includes Karnak and Luxor Temple, entry tickets provided by us, a professional Egyptologist guide and private air-conditioned transport. You can find more options among our Luxor day tours.

After dark, the Karnak Temple Sound and Light Show offers a different view of the temple, with an English show every evening.

How to Visit Karnak Temple Step by Step

Once you know how to get there, the visit itself follows a simple order.

Step 1: Arrive Early

Karnak opens at 6:00 am every day, and last entry is at 4:00 pm. Discover the temple's opening hours and ticket prices to discover the immortal marvels of karnak on time. Arrive at opening if you can: the air is cool, the light is soft and large groups usually reach the gates from about 8:30 am. From May to September, avoid midday entirely. See the best time to visit Luxor and the weather in Luxor.

Step 2: Buy Your Ticket

The adult ticket costs EGP 600 for foreign visitors and EGP 300 for students with a valid card, and it includes the Open Air Museum. Buy it in advance at egymonuments.com, the official site of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, or at the ticket office by the visitor center. Bring a bank card and some Egyptian pounds as a backup. The separate Temple of Mut precinct needs its own ticket.

Step 3: Pass Through the Visitor Center

Bags pass through a security scanner at the entrance. Restrooms and a small café are near the visitor center, so use them before you start. If you are not on a tour, licensed guides wait near the gate.

Step 4: Follow the Main Axis

Walk from the river toward the sanctuary along the temple's east-west axis:

  1. The Avenue of Ram-Headed Sphinxes and the First Pylon.
  2. The Great Court, with the small Temple of Ramesses III.
  3. The Great Hypostyle Hall, with its 134 columns, the heart of any visit.
  4. The obelisks of Thutmose I and Hatshepsut.
  5. The sanctuary, the Festival Hall of Thutmose III and the Sacred Lake.

Plan two to three hours for this route. Our article on the Temple of Amun explains what each part means.

Step 5: Finish With the Open Air Museum

On your way out, turn north of the Great Court to see the Open Air Museum, home of the White Chapel of Senusret I and the Red Chapel of Hatshepsut. Then continue to Luxor Temple or the Luxor Museum to complete your East Bank day.

What to Wear, Bring and Know Before You Visit

A little preparation makes the difference between a tiring visit and a memorable one.

What to Wear

  • Loose, light clothes that cover shoulders and knees, which is both respectful and good sun protection.
  • Closed walking shoes with a good grip; the ground is uneven sand and stone.
  • A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and a warm layer for winter sunrise visits.

What to Bring

  • At least one liter of water per person; shade is scarce outside the Hypostyle Hall.
  • Sunscreen, your ticket or booking QR code, and small notes for tips. Our guide to tipping in Egypt gives typical amounts.
  • Your original student card if you are buying a student ticket.

For a full list, see what to pack for an Egypt vacation.

Site Rules

  • Photos with a mobile phone are free; professional filming needs a permit.
  • Drones are not allowed without official permission and are often confiscated at customs.
  • Do not climb on statues or walls, and do not touch painted reliefs.
  • Unofficial "guides" may offer to show you a hidden corner for a tip; a polite "no, thank you" is enough.

Our list of do's and don'ts in Egypt covers more local etiquette, and our article on whether it is safe to travel to Luxor answers common safety questions.

Tips for Families and Travelers With Limited Mobility

The main axis is long and mostly level, but paths are sandy and some areas have steps and high thresholds. Strollers are hard to push, so a baby carrier works better. Travelers with limited mobility can see the Hypostyle Hall and the main courts with help, and our wheelchair-accessible tours plan the route around these needs. Families will find more ideas in our guide on planning a family vacation in Egypt with children, and women traveling alone in our tips for traveling to Egypt as a solo woman.

Best Tips to Really Enjoy Your Karnak Temple Visit

Karnak is easy to see and harder to truly feel. These tips turn a walk past old stones into a visit you will remember.

  • Learn the story before you enter. Ten minutes reading about Amun-Re, Seti I and Ramses II changes how the reliefs look to you.
  • Start at the far end at sunrise. Walk straight to the eastern end of the temple as the gates open, enjoy the quiet, then work back toward the entrance as the crowds arrive.
  • Wait for the gap in the Hypostyle Hall. Groups move through in waves. Sit at the edge of a side aisle for ten minutes, and the forest of columns will often empty in front of you.
  • Look up. The capitals, architraves and clerestory windows still hold traces of original red, blue and yellow paint that most visitors walk past.
  • Hunt for small details. Compare the fine raised relief of Seti I in the northern half of the Hypostyle Hall with the deeper sunk relief of Ramses II in the south. Find the numbers in the offering lists, where a stroke means 1, a hoop means 10 and a coil means 100, and look for early Christian paintings on some columns.
  • Rest by the Sacred Lake. It is one of the few calm spots in the complex and a good place to take in its scale. Nearby, visitors walk around the granite Scarab of Amenhotep III for luck, a modern custom rather than an ancient one.
  • Photograph from the side aisles. A wide-angle lens and the low light of the first and last hours give the best shots of the columns.
  • Connect the dots. Many of the finest statues in the Luxor Museum came from the Karnak Cachette, buried inside the temple and found in 1903. Seeing them the same day brings the empty courts back to life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions you want answers to?

Yes. You can take a taxi or inDrive to the main gate, buy your ticket, and explore on your own. A guide is optional but helps a lot, because Karnak has very little signage. But you can just book a tour with Trips in Egypt for Karnak and enjoy all the incredible services and benefits.

Yes. Start at Karnak at 6:00 am, then cross the river for the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hatshepsut by late morning. It makes a long but rewarding day of eight to nine hours.

Visit Karnak first, in the cool morning, and Luxor Temple in the late afternoon. Luxor Temple stays open into the evening and is especially beautiful when lit after sunset.

Not directly, as there is no landing at the temple. You can, however, enjoy one of our felucca tours at sunset after your visit, sailing past the East Bank where Karnak stands.
